#14 Women's Soccer Snaps Two-Match Skid with 2-0 Win Over Pace
Panaro scores twice to lead the Ravens offensive attack; Brewer makes fives saves to earn shutout in first career start
BOXSCORE
RINDGE, N.H. (October 10, 2010) -- The No. 14-nationally
ranked Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team snapped a
two-match skid on Sunday afternoon with a satisfying 2-0 victory
over Pace at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens ran their record to
8-3-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Setters fell
to 3-10 and 1-10 in league play.
Junior midfielder Amanda Panaro (Rockland, Mass.)
scored twice to push her team-leading goal total to 13, but the
main story of the day was sophomore goalkeeper Lauren
Brewer (Westford, Mass.), who made five saves to earn the
shutout victory in her first career start.
Brewer was not really tested in the first period as Franklin
Pierce's backs did a solid job of keeping Pace from penetrating too
deep in the offensive zone. However, the Setters picked up the
offensive intensity in the final 45 minutes and recorded five
shots, but Brewer turned aside all of their attempts in sealing the
win for the Ravens. It was Brewer's fourth career appearance as she
saw limited action in three matches as a freshman last year.
Panaro provided all the offense Franklin Pierce would need in
picking up the win. She made it 1-0 Franklin Pierce in the 24th
minute after she took a pass from Margret Thorolfsdottir
(Reykjavit, Iceland) near the top of the box, turned
towards the goal and lofted a shot to the top corner of the net
past the out-stretch arms of the Pace goalkeeper. Thorolfsdottir
was credited with an assist on the scoring strike, which was her
second of the season.
Six minutes later Panaro struck again with a similar-type goal to
make it 2-0. Following a loose ball scramble near the top-right
corner of the box, Panaro tracked down the ball and turned to fire
a pass towards the mid-box. Her lofted pass kept creeping, though,
towards the goal instead of the mid-box, and again, the shot went
top-center of the goal past the leaping Pace goalkeeper.
Panaro's two goals were her 12th and 13th of the season, which
leads the team, and pulled her within a goal of tying for the
conference lead in tallies.
The Ravens recorded 18 shots, while limiting Pace to just eight.
Panaro had seven of Franklin Pierce's shots, including four on
goal, while Aya Noguchi (Tokyo, Japan) added four
shots as well.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Wednesday when the Ravens travel
to Springfield to face American International at 7 p.m.
