#14 Women's Soccer Drops Tough 3-2 Decision to #18 Merrimack

Franklin, Panaro score for Ravens

BOXSCORE

RINDGE, N.H. (October 5, 2010) – The No. 14-nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team dropped a tough 3-2 decision at No. 18 Merrimack on Tuesday evening in North Andover, Mass. The Ravens fell to 7-2-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Warriors improved to 7-2-2 and 7-1-1 in league play.

Senior midfielder Shona Franklin (Birmingham, England) and junior forward Amanda Panaro (Rockland, Mass.) each scored for the Ravens. It was Franklin’s fourth-straight match with a goal, while it was Panaro’s third in the last two contests.

Franklin got the scoring started for both teams as she scored in the 14th minute off a nice feed from Tori Gikas (Sydney, Australia), who lobbed the ball over the Merrimack backline, which allowed Franklin to sprint into the box to blast a score past the Warriors’ goalkeeper. It was Franklin’s fifth goal of the campaign.

However, Merrimack strung together goals late in the first half and early in the second half to build a 2-1 advantage. Jessica Peacock scored the late first-half goal in the 38th minute, while Kerri Domohowski scored in the 49th minute to put the Warriors on top.

Franklin Pierce regrouped from the tallies and got one from Panaro off a rebound attempt in the 70th minute to knot the score at 2-2. For Panaro, it was her 11th of the season, which is the second most in the NE-10.

Despite the strong comeback attempt, an unlucky bounce kept Franklin Pierce from picking up the win. Merrimack’s Danielle Dion blasted a shot inside 10 minutes remaining in the contest, which deflected off someone on the Ravens’ backline and into the back of the net for decisive tally.

Merrimack owned a 15-13 advantage in shots. Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass.) made seven saves in the setback as she fell to 7-2-1 on the year.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Friday night when the Ravens travel to New York to face Adelphi at 4 p.m. Franklin Pierce returns home to Sodexo Field on Sunday when it plays host to Pace at 1 p.m.
