#10 Women's Soccer Downs Le Moyne 3-0 on Sunday to Pick Up First Road Win of Season
Panaro scores twice to run goal-scoring streak to four games; Leon records second-straight shutout
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (September 12, 2010) -- The No.
10-nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team
picked up its first road win of the 2010 season on Sunday with a
3-0 triumph over Le Moyne in Syracuse, N.Y. The Ravens ran their
record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Northeast-10 play, while the
Dolphins dipped to 1-1-2 and 0-1-2 in league action.
Several impressive storylines that have been prevelant during the
initial few games of the 2010 season surfaced again in Sunday's
win. It marked Franklin Pierce's second-consecutive shutout victory
and third in four games this season, as junior goalkeeper
Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass.) made four saves in 84
minutes of action to earn the win. The Ravens limited Le Moyne to
just 12 shots, while generating 24 of their own, including nine
shots on goal.
Junior forward Amanda Panaro (Rockland, Mass.)
recorded six of those shots and scored twice to give her seven
goals in the first four games of the season. She has scored at
least once in each of the four games and has notched multiple-goal
games twice, including a three-goal effort in last week's 6-2 win
over Felician.
Panaro scored the first goal of the game, which would prove to be
the game-winner, marking the second-straight game she collected the
game-winning tally. In the 47th minute, Panaro broke a scoreless
tie as she headed in a crossing pass from senior midfielder Shona
Franklin (Birmingham, England). It was Franklin's second assist of
the season, which moved her into a tie with Panaro for the team
lead in that category.
The Ravens made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute when freshman midfielder
Joanna Gibson (London, England) notched her first
career collegiat goal as she capitalized off a failed clearing
attempt by the Le Moyne goalkeeper. Gibson was able to collect the
errant attempt and re-direct a shot into the center of the net.
Panaro capped the game's scoring with her second goal in the 85th
minute off yet another failed clear attempt by Le Moyne. Panaro's
seven goals and two assists so far this season gives her a
team-best 16 points. Panaro, the reigning NE-10 player of the week,
is leading the conference with an impressive 4.0 points per
game.
Franklin Pierce returns to action on Wednesday night when the
Ravens play host to Saint Michael's at 7 p.m. in Sodexo Field.
