Demoner and Johansson score two goals apiece
BOXSCORE
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (November 15, 2009) – The
20th-ranked Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team
downed Bridgeport, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon to advance to the NCAA
Division II Tournament East Region Championship game. The
third-seeded Ravens (18-4-1) will face top-seeded Saint Rose
(23-0-0) on Friday in Albany, N.Y. for the right to advance to the
NCAA quarterfinals.
The Ravens got a pair of goals each from junior forward
Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden) and senior
midfielder Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria, Brazil).
In addition to the goal scoring, Franklin Pierce received valuable
goalkeeping from sophomore Jocelyn Leon (Lennox,
Mass.) as she made nine saves to preserve the win. Leon
raised her record to 13-2-0 on the season.
Franklin Pierce went on top 1-0 in the 21st minute with a goal from
Johansson. Shona Franklin (Birmingham, England)
fed a pass to Johansson in the middle, where she responded by
blasting a shot past the Bridgeport goalkeeper.
Demoner put the Ravens up by a score of 2-0 in the 25th minute as
her tally would prove to be the game-winner on the afternoon. She
scored the goal off a free kick and was assisted by Kelly
Weygand (Bridgewater, Mass.).
Franklin also assisted on Johansson’s second goal of the
game, which came in the 53rd minute and made it 3-0 Ravens.
Franklin slipped a pass to Johansson who sent it past the
goalkeeper in the lower-right corner of the net. The goals were the
19th and 20th of the season for Johansson, who was named to the
Northeast-10 First-Team two weeks ago.
After the Purple Knights scored to make it 3-1, Demoner officially
put the match out of reach in the 80th minute with a goal that came
unassisted as she dribbled through the Bridgeport defense and blew
it past the goalkeeper. The goals were the 31st and 32nd of the
season for the 2009 Northeast-10 Player of the Year.
The Ravens will face Saint Rose this upcoming Friday for the third
time this season. Saint Rose has won the previous two matches,
including a 2-1 triumph last week in the conference championship
game.
