BOXSCORE
WORCESTER, MASS. (October 24, 2009) – The
Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team closed out the
2009 regular season on Saturday with a 3-1 triumph over Assumption
in Worcester, Mass. The Ravens concluded their regular season with
a 14-3-1 overall record and a 12-2-1 mark in the Northeast-10
Conference. Assumption fell to 6-9-1 and 6-7-1 in the league.
Franklin Pierce out-shot Assumption by a count of 14-4 and got
goals from Shona Franklin (Birmingham, England),
Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria, Brazil) and Rachel Smith
(Chichester, N.H.).
The game didn’t get off to a great start as Assumption scored
in the first minute to take a quick 1-0 lead.
However, the Ravens responded and took back the momentum a few
minutes later and would keep it the rest of the way in earning the
win.
Franklin tied it at 1-1 in the seventh minute when she scored on a
long goal from 18 yards out. It was her third goal of the
season.
Demoner put Franklin Pierce on top for good at 2-1 in the 37th
minute when she beat the Assumption goalkeeper to the upper right
corner of the net with a shot from the top of the box. It was her
27th goal of the season, which is tops nationally at all levels of
the NCAA, and it gave her 60 points for the regular season.
Smith capped the scoring for the Ravens in the 77th minute with a
goal which came off a shot that glanced off a defender and into the
back of the net. Smith capped her regular season with three
goals.
Freshman goalkeeper Casey Edward (Marshfield,
Mass.) made two saves in net to earn the win and improve
to 5-2-1 on the season.
Franklin Pierce is off until next Sunday when it will play host to
a first round game in the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.
The game will be held at Sodexo Field, but game time and opponent
