Women's Soccer Plays Adelphi to a 1-1 Draw Saturday
Gabriela Demoner ties game in 56th minute
BOXSCORE
RINDGE, N.H. (October 17, 2009) – The
Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team played Adelphi
to a 1-1 draw through regulation and two overtimes on Saturday
afternoon at Sodexo Field in Rindge, N.H. The Ravens are 12-3-1 on
the season and 10-2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Adelphi’s record went to 8-4-2 overall and 6-4-2 in the
league.
Senior midfielder Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria,
Brazil) tied the game at 1-1 in the 56th minute with a
sweet goal from 35 yards out. She gathered a loose ball near the
top-left corner of the box, turned, and fired a shot that beat the
Adelphi goalkeeper into the upper right corner of the net. It was
Demoner’s NCAA-leading 26th goal of the season, and marked
the second-straight game she accounted for all the goals scored for
Franklin Pierce. Demoner notched both goals in Franklin
Pierce’s 2-1 win over Merrimack on Wednesday night.
The teams played most of the remaining minutes in regulation near
the midfield stripe. However, they both had at least two strong
scoring chances in the final minutes, but could not convert.
Junior forward Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg,
Sweden) had two close scoring chances in the extra
sessions, but Adelphi goalkeeper Dorothy Connolly was able to make
two saves to preserve the tie.
The outcome marked the first tie for the Ravens this season as
they are battling for key positioning in the Northeast-10
Conference with the tournament beginning in two weeks.
Freshman goalkeeper Casey Edward (Marshfield,
Mass.) made six saves in the contest as her record is now
4-2-1 on the year. Franklin Pierce held a 28-13 advantage in
shots.
The Ravens return to action Tuesday when they play host to Saint
Anselm at 4 p.m. in Sodexo Field. The game will mark Senior Day as
the team’s seniors will be honored prior to the contest. For
