Women's Soccer Rallies For Late 2-1 Win Over Merrimack
Demoner scores twice in the win
BOXSCORE
RINDGE, N.H. (October 14, 2009) – The
Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team showed a flair
for the dramatic on Wednesday night as it scored late to pull out a
crucial 2-1 win over Merrimack at Sodexo Field in Rindge, N.H. The
Ravens improved to 12-3-0 overall and 10-2-0 in the Northeast-10.
Merrimack fell to 9-4-2 and 6-4-1 in the league.
Senior midfielder Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria,
Brazil) handled all of the offense for the Ravens as she
scored both goals to give her 25 on the season – which is
tops nationally at all levels of the NCAA (Divisions I, II &
III).
Sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass.)
made four saves in the contest to earn the win and run her record
to an impressive 8-1-0 on the year.
Demoner put the Ravens on top, 1-0, in the 17th minute when she
collected a ball near midfield, dribbled down the center to the top
of the box and blasted a shot that beat the goalkeeper in the lower
left corner.
The goal was big for Franklin Pierce as Merrimack proved to be a
tough out on this night, especially in the opening 45 minutes.
The Warriors did knot the contest at 1-1 in the 55th minute on a
goal by Kara Hennigan. The game remained tied until the final
minutes when Demoner rose up for another impressive tally.
She put Franklin Pierce in front to stay for good in the 85th
minute when she intercepted a pass at the top of the box and
quickly launched it into the lower right corner of the net for a
2-1 Ravens advantage.
Merrimack tried to knot it in the closing seconds, but Leon made
sure to preserve the lead with a late save.
Franklin Pierce returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to
Adelphi at 3 p.m. in Sodexo Field. For more information on Franklin
