No. 14 Women's Soccer Takes Down Southern Connecticut State
Johansson scores twice within 1:03 of each other
RINDGE, N.H. (October 3, 2009) – The
14th-ranked Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team
earned its eighth-straight win on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1
triumph over Southern Connecticut State at Sodexo Field in Rindge,
N.H. Franklin Pierce improved to 10-2-0 overall and 8-1-0 in
Northeast-10 competition. Southern Connecticut State fell to 6-5-0
and 3-5-0 in the league.
Junior forward Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg,
Sweden) accounted for both of Franklin Pierce’s
goals, as she scored them within a span of 1:03 in the first half
to give the Ravens a 2-0 lead. Both goals were unassisted and came
off turnovers.
The first tally came when senior forward Shannon Mulvey
(Worcester, Mass.) forced an SCSU turnover in the right
corner. The ball slipped over to Johansson, who blasted one from
the same corner into the upper left corner of the net to put the
Ravens up 1-0 at the 22:56 mark.
Johansson’s second goal came at 23:59 when she took a loose
ball from in front of the Southern Connecticut State net and lofted
it into the upper left corner. The turnover that led to the goal
was forced by senior midfielder Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria,
Brazil).
The goals for Johansson were her 12th and 13th of the season.
Saturday’s two-goal performance came on the heels of
Johansson scoring the game-winning goal with 61 seconds remaining
in Wednesday’s 3-2 road win at Stonehill.
Southern Connecticut State did not get off a shot until late in
the first half and was limited to just that one shot in the opening
45 minutes.
However, the Owls got on the scoreboard at the 52:25 mark in the
second half as Ashley Knight scored with a chip in off a header
pass from Katrina Cook.
Freshman goalkeeper Casey Edward (Marshfield,
Mass.) made just one save for the Ravens as she earned the
win to run her record in net to 4-1 on the season.
Franklin Pierce returns to action on Tuesday when it plays host to
American International at 6 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
