No. 14 Women's Soccer Downs Stonehill 3-2
Johansson scores at the 88:59 mark to lift Ravens to the win
EASTON, Mass. (September 30, 2009) – The
14th-ranked Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team
used a goal from junior forward Angelika Johansson
(Falkenberg, Sweden) with 61 seconds remaining to pull out
an exciting 3-2 win at Stonehill on Wednesday.
The victory ran Franklin Pierce’s win streak to seven, as it
improved to 9-2-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Stonehill slipped to 4-7-0 and 2-6-0 in the league.
Johansson, the reigning Northeast-10 Player of the Week, scored
the goal off a header in front of the net as she got a pass from
freshman back Julie Foster (Dennisport, Mass.).
The goal came at the 88:59 mark and was her 11th of the season.
Johansson was named the league’s player of the week on Monday
after she tallied five goals and 10 points last week as Franklin
Pierce went 2-0-0.
Foster factored in the final goal of the game after she had a hand
in the contest’s first goal. At the 16:24 mark of the first
half, Foster moved in front of the net and scored off a corner kick
to give the Ravens a 1-0 advantage. It was the first goal of her
collegiate career.
Stonehill tied the match at 1-1 at 25:39, when Alexandra Murphy
completed a penalty-kick goal as she deposited the ball in the
upper right corner of the net.
Senior forward Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria, Brazil)
put the Ravens back on top at 2-1 at the 32:32 mark with her 21st
goal of the season. Demoner put the shot in the net after she took
a pass from Mackenzie Bulych (Regina,
Saskatchewan) near the goal, turned and fired the shot
past Stonehill goalie Sarah Hickey.
Franklin Pierce just missed adding to its lead in the second half
as a pair of shots dinged off the crossbar.
Stonehill was able to capitalize and tied the game at 2-2 at the
57:58 mark when Kirstie St. Martin slipped the ball into the lower
left-corner of the Ravens net.
Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Jocelyn Leon (Lenox,
Mass.) made seven saves to earn the win. However, her
streak of four-straight shutouts was snapped with Murphy’s
penalty kick in the first half.
The Ravens return to action Saturday when they play host to
Southern Connecticut State at 1 p.m. at Sodexo Field. For more
