Demoners Five Points Lead No. 22 Womens Soccer To 5-0 Shutout At New Haven
Senior scores twice, adds assist

WEST HAVEN, Conn.
(September 20, 2009) – Senior midfielder
Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria, Brazil) scored twice
and added an assist to tally five points on Sunday afternoon and
lead the No. 22 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University
women’s soccer team to a 5-0 victory at New Haven in
Northeast-10 Conference play at Kayo Field. Freshman goalkeeper
Casey Edward (Marshfield, Mass.) made two saves in
net to record her first career shutout.
With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 6-2-0 (4-1-0
Northeast-10), while New Haven falls to 5-4-0 (2-4-0 Northeast-10)
with the loss. Franklin Pierce has now posted four consecutive
shutouts and has not allowed a goal in the last 360 minutes, dating
to an overtime game-winner by Florida Southern on Sept. 4.
Franklin Pierce scored early and often in West Haven, as the Ravens
piled up three first-half goals, beginning with the second goal of
the season by sophomore midfielder Tori Gikas (Sydney,
Australia) in the ninth minute, as she put home a cross
from junior midfielder Shona Franklin (Birmingham,
England).
Later, in the 25th minute, Demoner sent a feed to junior forward
Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden), who
caught the goalkeeper out of position and knocked the ball into an
empty net for her fifth goal of the season. Demoner later capped
the first-half scoring with her 15th goal of the season, in just
her seventh match, as she found the net with a free kick in the
42nd minute.
Franklin Pierce controlled play throughout the opening 45 minutes
and headed into the halftime break with a 7-1 advantage in
shots.
Franklin Pierce added a pair of insurance markers in the second
half to create the 5-0 final. In the 48th minute, junior midfielder
Snezana Stojkovic (Vitojevci, Serbia) put home a
rebound for the first goal of her career. Later, Demoner struck for
her second goal of the game in the 76th minute to close out the
scoring. On the season, Demoner has chalked up 35 points on 16
goals and three assists through her first seven matches.
Each team attempted four shots in the second half as Franklin
Pierce enjoyed an 11-5 edge over the course of the game. The Ravens
attempted three corner kicks, while New Haven earned two.
Edward stopped both shots sent her way to earn the win (2-1-0) and
her first career shutout in net for Franklin Pierce. Senior
goalkeeper Brianna Girard and sophomore Kim Taylor combined to make
two saves against seven shots in the losing effort for New
Haven.
The Ravens return to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when they
return home to host Bentley in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge, N.H.
