RINDGE, N.H. (September 6, 2009) – Senior back Rachel Smith (Chichester, N.H.) scored a pair of first-half goals, including the game-winner, on Sunday afternoon to lead the No. 9 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Le Moyne in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Senior midfielder Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria, Brazil) also scored twice and added a pair of assists for Franklin Pierce.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 3-2-0 (1-1-0 Northeast-10), while Le Moyne falls to 2-1-1 (0-1-1 Northeast-10) with the loss.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Demoner took a corner kick on the right side. Her service fell at the top of the six-yard box where Smith got her head to it and redirected it over the keeper and inside the left post to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead. Demoner would make it 2-0 in the 18th minute with her seventh goal of the season. She corralled a feed from the right side inside the penalty area, spun around the defender behind her and beat Le Moyne freshman goalkeeper Kelsey McGee to the far side, inside the left post.

Franklin Pierce pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 36th minute. Sophomore forward Amanda Panaro (Rockland, Mass.) served a free kick into the box from 40 yards out on the right side. Again it was Smith who got her head to it at the top of the six-yard box and popped it over McGee and into the net for her second goal of the game. Soon thereafter, in the 40th minute, Demoner made it 4-0 in favor of the Ravens. With the ball at her feet at the top of the penalty area on the left side, she faked her defender left, went right and struck a shot which beat McGee, bounced off the left post and found its way into the net. Demoner’s second goal of the game was her eighth of the season, surpassing her total from 2008 in only her fourth match of the season.

Junior forward Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden) would cap the first-half scoring with her third goal of the season in the 44th minute. She was sent in all alone on a nifty flick-on by Demoner near midfield. Johansson drew the keeper off her line, went around her on the right side and knocked the ball into the empty net to push the lead to 5-0. The Ravens controlled play throughout the first half and went into the intermission with a 22-3 shots advantage.

Le Moyne’s best chance of the contest came in the 74th minute, when senior forward Christina Harrison was awarded a penalty kick after being tripped up on a run through the left side of the box. However, her strike went towards the middle of the cage and was turned aside by Franklin Pierce sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass.) to preserve the shutout.

Le Moyne upped the pressure in the second half to the tune of a 13-4 shots advantage, while Franklin Pierce held a 26-16 edge over the full 90 minutes. The Ravens attempted four corner kicks to Le Moyne’s three.

Leon stopped all six shots on her cage to earn the win (2-1-0) in net for Franklin Pierce and post her first shutout of the season. McGee made five saves against 10 shots and took the loss (0-1-0) between the pipes for Le Moyne.

The Ravens return to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 8, when they host Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
