Demoner nets two goals to total five for weekend

 NEW HAVEN, Conn. (August 29, 2009) – Senior midfielder Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria, Brazil) scored twice on Saturday afternoon to lead the No. 11 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team to a 7-0 victory over Molloy in non-conference play on the second day of the SCSU Owl Classic, hosted by Southern Connecticut State at Jess Dow Field. Demoner scored five goals in two games at the event.


With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-0 (0-0 Northeast-10), while Molloy falls to 0-2 (0-0 East Coast) with the loss.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when junior forward Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden) netted her first goal of the season on a counter-attack, courtesy of an assist by junior midfielder Shona Franklin (Birmingham, England). For Franklin, it was her first point since Nov. 18, 2007, after missing last season due to injury.

From there, the Ravens would break it open with three goals in the final 7:21 of the first half. In the 38th minute, Demoner struck for her fourth goal of the weekend on a feed from Franklin, who picked up her second assist of the opening stanza. In the 43rd minute, senior forward Mackenzie Bulych (Regina, Saskatchewan) found the net to make it 3-0 on an assist from freshman back Julie Foster (Dennis, Mass.), who picked up her second assist in as many games to start her collegiate career. Finally, sophomore midfielder Tori Gikas (Sydney, Australia) scored her first goal as a Raven in the 44th minute off an assist from Johansson to give Franklin Pierce a 4-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

Much like Friday afternoon, the Ravens dominated the opening 45 minutes and enjoyed a 16-2 edge in shots at the intermission.

Franklin Pierce would tack on three goals in span of 5:15 late in the second half to create the 7-0 final. In the 75th minute, senior midfielder Kelly Sisco (Hubbardston, Mass.) tallied her third goal of the weekend to make it 5-0 while Foster dished out her second assist of the game. In the 77th minute, Demoner potted her second goal of the afternoon to make it a six-goal game. In the 80th minute, sophomore forward Amanda Panaro (Rockland, Mass.) netted an unassisted tally for her second goal in as many games and cap the scoring.

Franklin Pierce tallied eight shots in the second half to finish with a 24-3 advantage. The Ravens attempted four corner kicks to two for Molloy.

Freshman goalkeeper Casey Edward (Marshfield, Mass.) started in goal and stopped the only shot she faced over the first 79:40 to pick up the victory (1-0-0) in net for Franklin Pierce in her collegiate debut. Senior Christina Aquilon stopped five of 12 shots sent her way and took the loss (0-2-0) between the pipes for Molloy.

The Ravens return to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 1, when they travel to Massachusetts Lowell for their Northeast-10 Conference opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Cushing Field in Lowell, Mass. The Ravens host their home opener on Friday, Sept. 4 against Florida Southern at 4 p.m. as part of Pierce Pride Kickoff 2009, featuring games, giveaways, promotions and postgame fireworks following the evening’s 7 p.m. men’s soccer contest, courtesy of Atlas Pyrotechnics.
