#15 Franklin Pierce Holds Off Assumption, 2-1

Ravens ride two first half goals to bounce-back win
WORCESTER, Mass. (October 12, 2008) - Franklin Pierce University, ranked 15th in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, scored two first half goals and held off Assumption College down the stretch for a 2-1 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Multi-Sport Stadium this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce scored twice in less than two minutes late in the first half to stake a two goal lead before halftime and withstood a late Assumption rally which produced its lone goal in the final ten minutes. Senior Kelly Sisco (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) and sophomore All-American Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden) scored goals for the Ravens, while sophomore Kristina Gillen (East Bridgewater, Mass./Carver) connected for the Greyhounds.

Senior goalkeeper Brittany Ester (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) made two saves to preserve the victory for Franklin Pierce, while sophomore Lauren Keating (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) stopped eight shots for Assumption. The Ravens finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots for the match after producing an 11-2 margin on the opening half.
Franklin Pierce took the lead in the 38th minute, when she took a cross from junior Allison Haines (Honolulu, Hawaii/Roosevelt) and slipped a shot inside the left post past Keating for her fourth goal of the season. The Ravens doubled their lead just 1:13 later as Johansson bagged her Conference leading 16th goal of the season in the 40th minute.
Assumption out-shot Franklin Pierce 5-4 in the second half and finally drew within one as Gillen scored unassisted for her fifth goal of the season with just 6:54 to play in regulation. Gillen had another shot go wide just 38-seconds after the goal, but that would prove to be the final shot of the match by either side.
Franklin Pierce (8-3-1, 6-2-1 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday for a key NE-10 match up with 18th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Sodexo Field at 4 p.m. Assumption (6-6-1, 3-5-1 NE-10) travels to UMass Lowell on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
