Pair headline list of four All-New England picks for Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. (December 21, 2007) - Two members of the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team have earned All-America status from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and adidas.

Senior midfielder Gabriela Demoner (Curitiba, Brazil) earns first team All-America honors for the second-straight year, while freshman forward Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden) has been selected to the second team following her first collegiate season. The pair headline a list of four Ravens to earn NSCAA/adidas Division II All-New England region honors with their first team selections to that team. Senior midfielder Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) and sophomore back Rachel Smith (Chichester, N.H./Bible Baptist School (Pa.)) earned second team All-Region accolades.

Demoner's first team selection increased Franklin Pierce's Division II record total to 29 all-time, while the two picks overall give the Ravens a total of 41 NSCAA/adidas All-Americans in program history. Demoner is the eighth player in program history to earn first team All-America honors twice, while Johansson is just the third freshman in program history to earn All-America status - joining sophomore teammate Shona Franklin (Leicester, England) and Parnilla Larsson (1995).

Demoner, the Daktronics All-New England region and Northeast-10 Player of the Year, is also a two-time first team All-New England and All-NE-10 selection over two seasons with Franklin Pierce. This fall, she led the Conference with 68 points (2nd nationally) and 28 goals (3rd), while her 12 assists are good for third in the Conference (12th). Demoner also netted three match-winning goals (7th NE-10) and scored the opening goal in seven of their 25 matches this fall. She was also named Most Outstanding Offensive Player at the NCAA Division II Final Four, as the Ravens earned National Runner-up honors, and earned NE-10 Player of the Week honors on four occasions this fall.

Demoner enters her final year of eligibility next fall ranked tenth in program history with 110 career points (17th in NE-10 history), while her 43 career goals are also good for tenth all-time and her 24 career assists are just two shy of cracking the program's top 15. Demoner's nine career match-winning goals are tied for ninth in program history.

Johansson, the NE-10 Freshman of the Year and first team All-New England and All-NE-10 pick, made an immediate splash in her first season at Franklin Pierce before a knee injury ended her season at the start of the postseason. She ranked third on the team with 27 points (6th NE-10) and 11 goals (4th) to go with five assists. She earned NE-10 Freshman of the Week three times and Player of the Week once.

Johansson produced one of the top goal scoring outings in Division II this season with her four goals in the opening 16 minutes of Franklin Pierce's 9-0 win over Philadelphia University on August 25. She also netted a hat trick in the Ravens 4-1 win at No. 24 Merrimack College on September 25.

Giardina earns NSCAA/adidas All-Region honors for the first time with her second team selection. She is a two-time All-NE-10 and Daktronics All-New England region honoree as well. Giardina has performed well in the classroom, earning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District and NE-10 All-Academic honors twice.

One of six Ravens to start all 25 matches this season, Giardina finished second on the team with 29 points (4th NE-10), dishing a team-best 13 assists (2nd NE-10) to go with eight goals. She also finished with a Conference-best five match-winning goals - including three in the Ravens postseason run.

Giardina capped her collegiate career ranked 25th in program history with 59 career points to go with 27 assists (14th) and 16 goals in 89 career matches played.

Smith earns NSCAA/adidas All-New England honors for the first time with her second team selection, having also been named a second team All-Conference pick. Smith converted to Franklin Pierce's defensive unit after playing forward her freshman season. Smith was the anchor of a Franklin Pierce defense that led the NE-10 with a 0.46 team goals against average (5th nationally) and a program-record matching 16 shutouts (1st). The Ravens did not yield a goal in eight postseason matches (760 minutes), including all six NCAA Tournament contests (560 minutes).

Smith led all Raven defenders with ten points and four goals (two match-winners) to go with two assists. A standout in the classroom as well, she was an NE-10 All-Academic honoree this fall and Commissioner's Honor Roll Silver Scholar. Smith started 16 of 21 matches played as a forward for Franklin Pierce her freshman season, ranking fourth on the team, and second among freshmen, with five goals (two match-winners) and 12 points, adding two assists.

Franklin Pierce (18-1-6, 9-1-4 NE-10) finished as national runners-up in the NCAA Division II Championships this fall, falling to the University of Tampa 3-1 in a penalty shootout after the two sides played to a scoreless double-overtime draw in the December 1 championship match in Orange Beach, Ala. The Ravens were making their 16th-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, capturing its 12th-straight New England region title on the way to earning their Division II record 14th Final Four berth and record seventh appearance in the championship match.
