Scavo's three points leads Ravens to semifinal date with fourth-seeded Saint Rose

RINDGE, N.H. (October 31, 2004) - Top-seeded Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 4 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas women's Division II poll, got a goal in each half to dispatch eighth-seeded UMass Lowell in quarterfinal round action of the 2004 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament this afternoon.

Franklin Pierce (16-1, 13-1 NE-10) advances to Wednesday's semifinal round where it will host fourth-seeded College of Saint Rose (13-3-2, 9-3-2 NE-10) at 3:30 p.m. Saint Rose advanced with a 4-2 victory over fifth-seeded Bryant University earlier today. UMass Lowell, which was participating in the postseason for the first time in program history, sees its season come to a close with a 9-10-1 overall mark (6-7-1 NE-10).            

Sophomore back Alex Scavo (Toronto, Ontario/Brother Andre) led the Franklin Pierce attack with a goal and assist. Junior All-American Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) netted a goal for the Ravens.

Scavo opened the scoring in the 28^th minute when she pounced on a UMass Lowell defensive turnover in close to the goal and fired a shot that deflected off River Hawk freshman goalkeeper Katelyn Campopiano (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) and into the right side of the net.

Scavo set up the Ravens second marker just 4:13 into the second half as she hit Hislop with a pass at the top of the penalty area. Hislop then dribbled through two defenders before blasting a shot past Campopiano from in close.

Franklin Pierce freshman Jenna Mello (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) registered one first-half save to preserve her fifth shutout of the season. Campopiano kept the River Hawks in the match with eight stops, including five in the second half.

UMass Lowell had a chance to net its first goal in program history against the Ravens, but junior Jody Graham's (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) low angle shot off a defensive turnover caromed off the post.
