Women's Soccer Team Stunned by Southern Conn

Owls Score with 22 Seconds Left to Pull Out 1-0 Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 21, 2000) - Jenny Wilkin (Hexham, England) scored with 22 seconds left in regulation Saturday as the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team shocked Franklin Pierce College, 1-0, in a key Northeast-10 Conference match.

The win was the biggest in the five-year history of the Southern and all but guarantees that the Owls (16-0, 13-0 NE-10) will host at least one match in the upcoming NCAA Division II tournament.

While Southern came into the match undefeated and ranked third nationally, the Ravens (11-2-1, 9-1-1) were ranked eighth nationally and needed a win to vault back into the top spot in the region.

The loss marked the first-ever conference loss for the Ravens, covering a span of six years. It also marks the first time they had lost more than one match in a season since 1993.

Despite out-shooting the Owls, 12-8, and controlling possession throughout most of the second half, the Ravens continued to struggle to finish their chances.

Southern made them pay on their final attack into the offensive zone when Theresa Uliano (Newington, Conn.) tracked down a crossing pass by Danielle Lacroix (West Haven, Conn.) and kept the ball from going over the endline. She directed the ball back in front of the net and Wilkin was there with a quick shot to the far post.

A scoreless first half featured few real chances for either team. Franklin Pierce held a slim advantage in shots (3-2) and had an edge in possession time, but failed to turn that into anything dangerous on net.
