Assumption Pulls Away in the First Half, Defeats Women's Lacrosse, 20-9

RINDGE, N.H. (4/12/23)  – The Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team lost to Assumption University, 20-9, on Wednesday afternoon at Sodexo Field, as the Greyhounds used a 12-4 first half and held off a third-quarter push back by the Ravens to earn the in-conference victory.

With the loss, Pierce women's lacrosse drops to 2-10 (1-7 NE10) overall while Assumption improves to 6-5 (3-4 NE10) on the year with the road win.

Greyhound attacker Grace Chicko would open the game with back-to-back strikes just 2:20 apart, eventually leading to Assumption scoring five of the game's first six goals in the opening frame. Pierce would slash into the visitor lead shortly after Chicko's second goal, with freshman attacker Maura Cogavin (Franklin, Mass.) netting her fifth of the season to kick it off for the Ravens. Juniors Olivia Delonais (North Andover, Mass.) and Kayli Hoefs (Amsterdam, N.Y.) would also add strikes in the first quarter for Pierce, who would trail the Greyhounds 7-3 after 15-minutes played.

Assumption would then go on to outscore Pierce 5-1 in the second quarter to stretch their lead out to 12-4 at the half. The scoring included two goals from Assumption's Isabelle Edwards, completing her first half hat-trick, while Pierce's lone tally would belong to senior attacker Gabrielle Oswald (Nedrow, N.Y.).

In the third quarter, the Ravens would increase the intensity as the two teams would fight each other to a 4-4 scoring standoff. Senior midfielder Katelyn Hadden (Newburyport, Mass.) would get things started in the second half with a man-up strike at the 12:30 mark, courtesy of a Kayli Hoefs assist.  Later on in the frame, with Pierce trailing 15-5, Kayli Hoefs would find the back of the net with her second of the game, unassisted to spearhead a 3-0 run for the Ravens. The next two strikes would arrive over the next minute, with Katelyn Hadden and Gabrielle Oswald each collecting their second goals of the contest. Assumption would add one more before the end of the quarter, and would still be doubling-up the Ravens by a 16-8 margin entering the fourth.

Assumption put the game away with three unanswered goals, following what would be Pierce's final strike of the game with 11:28 left to play from Gabrielle Oswald for the hat-trick.

In goal, senior Erin Blake (Southborough, Mass.) stopped 16-of-36 shots faced to claim the loss (2-8) for Pierce, while Skylar Troyan earned the win (6-5) for the opposition, turning aside 5-of-14.

Women's lacrosse will hop back on the road for their next matchup on Saturday, April 15th where they will face American International (2-8, 1-7 NE10) on their turf.
