Women’s Lacrosse Downed at No. 18 Assumption, 18-8

Katelyn Hadden

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 13, 2022) – Riding a three-game win streak, the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team headed south to No. 18 nationally ranked Assumption University for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Wednesday night. A strong offensive performance by the Greyhounds was too much to handle for the Ravens, who saw a three-game winning streak snapped with an 18-8 loss.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-8 (3-6 NE10), while Assumption brings their record to 7-5 (5-3 NE10).

Assumption struck first, almost immediately after the opening draw control, on a smooth passing play finished by sophomore Ella Tenney just 24 seconds in. Two more goals at the 1:52 and 3:29 marks of the opening quarter forced the Ravens to take an early timeout.

Franklin Pierce was able to generate offensive looks in the Greyhounds' end of the field, but senior netminder Allie Collins was able to keep the Ravens off the board for the entirety of the opening frame. The best look of the quarter came with just under five minutes to play in the frame, for graduate student Caroline Lounsbury (Franklin, Mass.), on a rush from the top of the arc into the crease, but Collins shut it down with her second save of the game.

Assumption staked out a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, and added another goal in the opening minute of the second quarter to make it 8-0. The Ravens finally got on the board with their first goal of the game 3:35 into the stanza. Junior Gabrielle Oswald (Nedrow, N.Y.) brought the ball down the left side of the field and fed it out front to senior Morgan Baxendale (Orchard Park, N.Y.) for the latter's 10th goal of the season.

The Ravens added another, three minutes later, on a free-position shot for senior Megyn Ayotte (Guilford, Vt.). Ayotte started on the left side of the net and carried the ball in tight while avoiding Greyhound sticks to send a low shot between the legs of Collins. Oswald picked up her second assist of the game moments later, when she found senior Savannah Ernst (American Fork, Utah) in front of the net for her team-leading 34th goal of the season.

Despite starting to find success on the offensive side of the ball, the Ravens were unable to hold off the Greyhounds on their own side of the field and trailed 12-3 at halftime.

The third quarter had a less-than-ideal start for the Ravens, who surrendered a pair of goals, but junior Katelyn Hadden (Newburyport, Mass.) got one back for the crimson and grey by popping in front from behind the cage, shaking off a defender and putting a shot into the top corner of the net.

The teams traded goals in the final stages of the third quarter, with graduate student Jenna Cimbron (Bristol, R.I.) notching her 17th of the season for the Ravens, but the Greyhounds carried a 16-5 lead into the fourth quarter.

Hadden, Baxendale, and Ernst each added goals in the fourth, but it would not be enough, as Assumption cruised to the 10-goal victory.

Senior Megan Bacik (Huntington Station, N.Y.) played the first half in the Franklin Pierce net, made five saves against 17 shots and suffered the loss (3-2). Junior Erin Blake (Southborough, Mass.) took over for the second half and stopped three of nine shots. Collins (7-5) made nine saves against 17 shots at the other end of the field for Assumption.

Next up for the Ravens is a home date against NE10 opponent American International on Senior Day. Franklin Pierce will honor its senior class prior to the noon start at Sodexo Field.
