Women’s Lacrosse Picks up Second Straight Win with 11-7 Decision over Saint Michael’s

Megyn Ayotte

COLCHESTER, Vt. (April 20, 2021) – It was not necessarily pretty, but the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team got the job done on the road on Tuesday afternoon. The Ravens got four goals from junior Megyn Ayotte (Guilford, Vt.) and four points (3-1-4) from junior Savannah Ernst (American Fork, Utah), including the 100th of her career, to hold off a winless Saint Michael's team and pick up an 11-7 win.

With the Northeast-10 Conference victory, Franklin Pierce improved to 4-1 (4-1 NE10), while Saint Michael's fell to 0-8 (0-8 NE10).

Ernst's 100th point came via an early second-half goal. She became the 15th member of the program's 100-point club, whose membership includes senior teammate Caroline Lounsbury (Franklin, Mass.), as well as both of the team's coaches, Caitlin Sweeney '18 and Briana Sweeney '18. Ernst added another goal later and finished the day with an 84-17-101 career scoring line.

Earlier in the day, Saint Michael's scored the game's first goal just 2:08 into the contest, on an unassisted shot from junior Jordy Fenton, but Franklin Pierce would answer quickly. Just 93 seconds later, Ernst found freshman Gabby Oswald (Nedrow, N.Y.) for the freshman's first of two goals in the game.

Saint Michael's would regain the lead one more time, with 24:46 left in the first half, thanks to junior Kelsey Bush. From there though, the Ravens would score four straight, including Oswald's second of the game on a free position shot, to take the lead for good. A free-position shot by senior Ashley Turner with 3:19 to play cut Franklin Pierce's lead to 5-3 heading into halftime.

The Ravens would add three straight goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half, as Ernst, Lounsbury and Ayotte extended the lead to 8-3. Franklin Pierce was effectively in control of the game from then on, though the Ravens did little to completely put away the Purple Knights. Saint Michael's would trim the lead to four on three occasions, but could get no closer, as the Ravens held on for the 11-7 win.

Five different Ravens collected three ground balls apiece, while sophomore Danielle Brazeau (Southborough, Mass.) led the team with three caused turnovers. Ernst and graduate student Sarah Waldrep (North Andover, Mass.) snagged five draw controls each.

The Saint Michael's offensive effort consisted of seven unassisted goals from seven different goal-scorers. Defensively, senior Emma Coleman piled up six caused turnovers to lead all players and added a pair of ground balls as well. Senior Steph Brunelle nabbed a game-high five ground balls, while freshman Darby Rich led the team with three draw controls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Blake (Southborough, Mass.) made nine saves against 14 shots while playing the first 45:29 in net to pick up the win (3-1) for the Ravens. Senior Lucy Chin (0-7) played the whole game for the Purple Knights, made 12 saves against 23 shots and suffered the loss.

The Ravens are scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 23, when they travel to Southern New Hampshire for a 3:30 p.m. start.
