Sweeney, Lounsbury Net Half-Dozen Each in Season Opener, Women’s Lacrosse Downs Post, 22-7

RINDGE, N.H. (March 6, 2018) – With one playing in her first collegiate game and the other playing the first game of her final collegiate season, freshman attack Caroline Lounsbury (Franklin, Mass.) and senior midfielder Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) struck for six goals apiece on Tuesday evening at Sodexo Field. Sweeney added three assists along the way to pile up nine points, as the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team opened the season with a 22-7 win over Post in non-conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce opens the season at 1-0, while Post falls to 0-3.

Franklin Pierce dominated the game statistically, as the Ravens racked up advantages of 36-18 in shot attempts and 23-7 in draw controls. The crimson and grey were efficient as well, as they scored on all four free-position shots they attempted and went 12-for-14 on clear attempts. For its part, Post was just 1-for-6 on free-position shots and 11-for-17 on clear attempts.

Franklin Pierce jumped out of the gate with three goals in the first 90 seconds and the game's first five goals overall, over a span of 5:39. Sweeney had three points with a goal and two assists in the opening spurt, while senior attack Anna Wilbert (Bohemia, N.Y.) beat the goalie twice on the right side -- both times off feeds from Sweeney -- to cap the run.

After Post struck for its first goal of the day, the Ravens pressed back down on the accelerator. Sweeney took care of the next two herself, including a highlight-reel spin move through the middle of the defense before finishing to make it 6-1. She followed with Franklin Pierce's first free-position goal less than two minutes later. The two goals sparked an 8-1 run through the middle of the first half for the Ravens.

In all, Franklin Pierce piled up a 16-4 lead before the horn sounded for halftime. Sweeney put home all six of her goals in the first half.

Post scored two of the first three goals in the second half, but otherwise it continued to be all Ravens. Franklin Pierce would outscore Post 6-3 in the second half on the way to the 22-7 victory. Lounsbury poured in three goals in the second half.

Sweeney (6-3-9) and Lounsbury (6-0-6) led the way offensively for Franklin Pierce, while sophomore attack Bella Lima (Hudson, Mass.) (2-1-3), freshman midfielder Zoe Totland (Salt Lake City, Utah) (1-2-3) and freshman midfielder Maddie Hasson (Newington, Conn.) (1-2-3) all added three points each. Sweeney led the way with five ground balls, while she and Totland nabbed 11 draw controls apiece.

For Post, freshman attack Sydney Hogan led the way with four points on two goals and two assists, while senior midfielder Savannah Schwack struck for three goals in defeat. Senior midfielder Georgia Black led the Eagles with four ground balls, while sophomore midfielder Jaylene Souto picked up three of her own. Schwack collected a team-best four draw controls, while Souto caused a game-best three turnovers.

Franklin Pierce got all three of its goalkeepers into the mix on Tuesday, with sophomores Casey Butera (West Milford, N.J.) and Casarra Roderick (Everett, Mass.) each making their collegiate debuts. Butera (1-0) was the beneficiary of the early burst of offense to pick up the win. Senior Madison Murray (Berkley, Mich.) had the most impressive day of the three statistically, with six saves against seven shots on goal.

Freshman Noreen Donnelly (0-3) went the distance for Post and stopped nine of 31 shots in defeat.

The Ravens return to the field on Monday, March 12, when they remain home to host St. Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
