Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Saint Anselm on the Road, 14-11

MANCHESTER, N.H. (March 26, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team remained neck-and-neck with Saint Anselm until late in the second half, when the Hawks used a four-goal run to take the win on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 conference match-up, 14-11, at Grappone Stadium.

With the loss, the Ravens fall to a 4-2 record overall, and 1-2 in conference. The Hawks advance to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the NE-10.

The winning goalie was Saint Anselm senior Jane Bunn, who is now 3-2 after facing 15 shots and making four saves. Junior keeper Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) is now 4-2 after coming up with nine saves on 23 shots.

In the first half of the game, both teams remained evenly matched, with the game being tied five times. Sophomore midfielder Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.) had back-to-back goals for the Ravens first lead of the game, 2-1. After the Hawks fired back to tie, senior attack Nicole Dale (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and senior attack Nicole Beliveau (Westfield, Mass.) connected for two goals to push the Ravens to a 5-3 lead with 20 minutes left in the first half.

Saint Anselm was able to re-tie on a free-position shot by sophomore midfielder Erica Mattila for a 7-7 game. The Hawks then struck for a two-goal lead, but were followed by two Dale goals in the final two minutes to set the game even again, at 9-9. Last-second efforts by Saint Anselm sophomore midfielder Emma Palumbo set the Hawks out front going into the second half, 10-9.

Beliveau was able to tie the game early in the second, but four straight Saint Anselm goals left the Ravens trailing behind. They could not recover and ultimately fell to Saint Anselm, 14-11.

Leading the Ravens was Dale with four goals, followed by Sweeney with three goals, while senior midfielder Lauren Beville (Jamestown, N.Y.) collected three ground balls. The Ravens totaled 20 shots attempts, 13 ground balls and seven caused turnovers.

Senior attack Caitlin Villareal led the way for Saint Anselm with six points on five goals and an assist, while Mattila added four scores. Villareal also snagged a game-best five draw controls.

The Ravens return home to host Saint Michael's on Wednesday, March 30, at 3:30 p.m.
