Strong Second Half Gives Women's Lacrosse the 12-11 Victory Over Saint Anselm

RINDGE, N.H. (March 31, 2015) –The Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team stunned Saint Anselm in the second half, outscoring the Hawks 6-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Sodexo. The 12-11 victory marks the first time since 2010 that the women's lacrosse team has been victorious over the Hawks.

With the victory the Ravens improve their record to 5-3 with a 3-3 record in the Northeast-10, while Saint Anselm falls 4-4 and 3-3 in NE-10 play.

Junior Nicole Dale (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) quickly countered Saint Anselm's goal, tying the game 1-1 with 27:10 left to play in the first half. The Hawks increased their lead 3-1 by 22:48.

Freshman Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.H.) and Dale each posted a goal to tie the game up 3-3 by 14:09. With under ten minutes to play, the Hawks regained their one goal advantage, that was taken away by senior Geena Franciosi (South Easton, Mass.). The Hawks would counter with two quick goals to hold a two goal advantage- the last time they would hold the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Senior Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.) would score in the final minute and a half to end the first half 6-5.

The Ravens started the second half with a quick rally, taking the lead and creating a three goal advantage , 6-9 with 16:18 to play in the second half. The rally included goals by Caitlin Sweeney junior Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.), and a pair of goals by freshman Briana Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y.).

Sophomore goalkeeper Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) denied the Hawks a goal for almost 18 minutes until junior Caitlin Villareal scored a free position shot at 15:44, 9-7.

In the final 15 minutes of play, Shopshire would  tally two goals with Dale adding in her final goal, to counter four goals scored by the Hawks for the Ravens to post the 12-11 victory.  

Caitlin Villareal posted three goals and assisted in two others for the Hawks, with senior Marissa Daly and junior Katie McKenna each scoring two. Junior Jane Bunn to the loss (3-4) while stopping 11 out of 21 shots in her 47:05 in cage, while senior Allee Ramzi stopped one out of three shots in ther 12:55 in cage.  

Madeline Shopshire and Nicole Dale led the Ravens each posting three goals. Briana Sweeney and Caitlin Sweeney each contributed two goals, while sophomore  Kenady Kelly  (Plymouth, N.H.) led the defense grabbing five ground balls. Junior Liana Roman (Springfield, Mass.) and senior Julia Smiley (Saunderstown, R.I.) each grabbed three ground balls, while Smiley also caused three turnovers . Denise Hunt made four saves against her 15 shots in her 60:00 in cage to take the win (4-2).

The Ravens hit the road on Friday, April 3rd to take on Saint Michael's in  Northeast-10 Conference play. Gametime is 3:00 p.m.
