Beville, Gauvin Lead Women’s Lacrosse to 12-9 Win Over SCSU

Shopshire adds pair of assists

Leach Leach had an assist as part of a second-half run for the Ravens in a win over SCSU on Saturday afternoon.

RINDGE, N.H. (March 29, 2014) – Sophomore midfielder Lauren Beville (Jamesville, N.Y.) picked up six points on five goals and an assist, while junior midfielder Amanda Gauvin (Ashburnham, Mass.) added five points on four goals and an assist on Saturday afternoon as the Franklin Pierce University women's lacrosse team notched a 12-9 victory over Southern Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Freshman attack Kennedy Sherman had three goals in defeat for SCSU.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 3-4 (2-3 Northeast-10), while Southern Connecticut State falls to 2-6 (0-4 Northeast-10). The Ravens put together a 7-2 run over a span of 21:32 in the second half to come away with the win. Franklin Pierce posted a 30-23 advantage in shot attempts on the day, including 23-18 in shots on goal.

SCSU struck first on Saturday, as junior attack Sarah Muise put home her team-leading 14th goal of the season just 93 seconds into the proceedings. The lead would be short-lived for the Owls, as Franklin Pierce scored the next five goals, spread over a span of 19:01, to take a 5-1 lead with 4:10 to play in the first half. Beville had the first three goals of the half, and also capped the run with her fourth goal of the period, while junior attack Madeline Shopshire (Hyannis, Mass.) put home a free-position attempt for her team-leading 15th goal of the campaign.

SCSU closed the gap to 5-3 heading into the intermission on goals from Sherman and sophomore attack Jennifer McCarthy in the final 2:36 of the stanza. The Owls also struck for the first two goals of the second half, as senior midfielder Emily Horan put away back-to-back free-position shots 1:22 and 2:35 into the half.

After seeing the lead evaporate, Franklin Pierce answered with goals from junior midfielder Megan Raposa (Tiverton, R.I.) and Gauvin to reclaim a two-goal lead with 13:48 to play. The goals were the start of the aforementioned 7-2 run through the middle of the second half. Gauvin had three more goals and an assist in the run, as she put together a four-goal second half, while Beville struck for her fifth and final goal of the afternoon and Shopshire dished out a pair of assists.

Gauvin's final goal of the day capped the run and made it a 12-7 game with 4:28 to play. Sherman and McCarthy had goals in the final 95 seconds for SCSU to create the 12-9 final.

Junior goalkeeper Julia Coakley (Bridgewater, Mass.) started, played the first half in net for Franklin Pierce and made five saves against eight shots on goal to pick up the win (3-4). Freshman Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass.) played the second half and made four saves against 10 shots on goal. At the other end of the field, sophomore Vanessa Pagano made 11 saves against 23 shots on goal and took the loss (2-5) for SCSU.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, April 2, when they travel to Saint Anselm for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Grappone Stadium in Manchester, N.H.
