Four Women's Ice Hockey Players Earn All-League Honors From NEWHA

WINTHROP, Mass. (3/3/23) – Per the official announcement by the league offices earlier this week, four members of the Franklin Pierce women's ice hockey team were unveiled as recipients of All-League honors by the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA).

The list of Ravens begins with senior defender Stephanie Caban (Fitchburg, Mass.), who received First Team honors, and continues with freshman goaltender Jill Hertl (Highland Park, Ill.) and forward Avery Farrell (Otsego, Minn.) who garnered All-Rookie selection. To round-out the list, senior forward Ava Kison (Eau Claire, Wisc.) was bestowed with All-Sportswomanship recognition.

Stephanie Caban receives her second consecutive First Team honors after completing the season as both the team and NEWHA leader in defensive points scored, finishing with five goals and 17 assists for 22 points and a +8 rating. This season, Caban was rewarded with her second collegiate NEWHA Defensive Player of the Week honor, and is receiving her fourth round of postseason awards from the league. Through 33 games played, Caban had five multi-point outings for the Ravens, including a four point (1G, 3A) performance on February 11th at Post University.

In her first season with the Ravens, Jill Hertl finished atop the rookie-netminder leaderboards in all of NCAA Division I, holding the top goals against average (1.81), save percentage (.934) and win percentage (.569) amongst all first year goaltenders. Her goals against average was also the best in the NEWHA through her 25 games played, in which time she compiled a 13-9-3 record with six total shutouts. This season, Hertl was a three-time Goaltender of the Week and four-time Rookie of the Week with the NEWHA, and was included in a group of five players included in the HCA's National Rookie of the Year watch list.

As another one of the new faces to the lineup this season, Avery Farrell jumped right into the fire and finished as the team leader in total points scored. This season, the Raven freshman totaled 28 points on 12 goals and 16 assists, which included three powerplay tallies and three game-winners, along with a +9 rating. Her 16 assists ranked 2nd amongst NEWHA first year players, tied for 7th-overall, and earned her a single Rookie of the Week honor.

As the team captain of the Ravens this season, senior Ava Kison logs her second collegiate postseason accolades from the NEWHA, and becomes the fourth player in program history to receive the All-Sportwomanship honor. Through 36 games played this season, Kison finished with a team-leading +11 rating on the ice, scoring seven times with 10 assists for 17 points on the year. Kison additionally had four different multi-point performances for the Ravens this season, with her most recent coming against Sacred Heart in game three of the NEWHA Quarterfinal.
