Hertl Backstops Women's Hockey to a 2-0 Silencer Over LIU

WINCHENDON, Mass. (2/18/23) – Great things happened at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce women's ice hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Long Island University (LIU) with a 2-0 shut out victory.

It was the final game of the Ravens regular season, as they will head into the NEWHA quarterfinals as the No.4 seed with a 16-13-3 (13-8-3 NEWHA) overall record. With the loss, LIU drops to 18-13-3 (17-4-3 NEWHA) overall.

The first period  was full of back and forth action from both sides, as each saw the importance of getting the afternoon's first goal. Through the opening 10-minutes, LIU did manage to hold a slight advantage on chances, as they out-shot the Ravens by a 10-4 margin. Midway through the opening frame, the Ravens received the game's first power play opportunity, but could not get one through as the Sharks were able to kill it off, ending the period at a scoreless, 0-0 stalemate.

At first glance, the second period looked and felt very similar to the first, with both teams continuing to trade chances at either end.  However, nearing five-minutes left in the second, the Ravens finally broke the ice on their second power play opportunity of the afternoon on a goal by senior winger Cailey McLaughlin (McLean, VA), as the puck caromed in off her body and in behind LIU netminder Tindra Holm. The Ravens would one more power play before the end of the period, but would have to settle for the single goal to carry a 1-0 lead into the third.

As was the case in the first two periods, the third period was more back and forth play between the Ravens and Sharks. Late in the period, with the LIU net empty for the extra attacker, freshman Avery Farrell (Otsego, Minn.) put the cap on the weekend with a quick shot off the boards, hitting the gaping cage to finalize the score 2-0.

Freshman Jill Hertl (Highland Park, Ill.) (13-9-3) was stellar in net, picking up her fifth shutout of the season after stopping all 29 shots faced. Tindra Holm (13-9-3) took the loss, stopping 14 of 15 shots she faced.

Women's hockey has locked up home ice for the upcoming NEWHA quarterfinal round (best of three) against fifth-seeded Sacred Heart University, which will open on Friday, February 24th at 4:00 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
