Women's Hockey Bested in Overtime at Post University, 3-2

SHELTON, Conn. (2/10/23) – The Franklin Pierce women's hockey team managed to salvage a point on Friday afternoon, but a squandered two-goal cushion led them to a 3-2 overtime loss at the hands of Post University at The Rinks at Shelton.

With the loss, a six-game unbeaten streak comes to an end for the Ravens, who drop to 13-13-2 (10-8-3 NEWHA) overall. The Eagles pick up a much-needed victory having only won twice entering the matchup, and improve to 3-24-2 (3-16-1 NEWHA) on the season.

Late in the first period, sophomore defender Julia Stevens (Minneapolis, Minn.) opened the scoring for Pierce after she hopped on a loose puck in the left circle, sending a wrist shot through a screen in front of the Post net by junior Emilie Prive (Morrisville, Vt.) with 2:11 left to play.

Mid-way through the second period, the Ravens would jump ahead 2-0 with Steven's second of the afternoon. Following a stretch pass from the defensive blue line by freshman Grace Shuck (Bloomington , Minn.), Stevens danced around the incoming Post defender to give herself a partial break toward the goal, cleanly beating Post goaltender Grace Glasrud from in close. However, things would slowly turn sour for the Ravens from then on out.

Nearing the completion of the second period, Post's Rylee Patfield cashed in on a rebound off a doorstep deflection in front of starter Jill Hertl (Highland Park, Ill.), cutting the Raven lead in half at 2-1 with 5:33 left in the frame.

Post would find the equalizer on the power play in the third period when forward Jenna Abeyta ripped a shot from the point through traffic in front of the Raven net, tying it up at 2-2 at the 14:19 mark of the final frame. As the game continued over the final five minutes, Pierce would attempt another six shots at the Post net, but would fail to re-establish their lead as the two teams headed to overtime.

Following four minutes of scoreless play in the overtime period, the Ravens fell victim to a crazy bounce off the glass on a clear attempt, resulting in a shot by forward Madeleine Noonan that produced a playable rebound. Needless to say, sophomore Kiersten Browning found herself in the right place at the right time, sending the loose puck over the right leg pad of Jill Hertl, winning the game by a 3-2  final in overtime.

Jill Hertl (11-9-3) claims the loss for the Ravens after surrendering three goals on 21 shots faced, making 18 total saves in the effort. Grace Glasrud (2-12-0) helped pace the Eagles to their first win in seven games, making 47 saves on 49 shots faced.

Women's hockey will have a chance to bounce back against Post University tomorrow (2/11) afternoon for a 2:30 p.m. puck-drop at The Rinks at Shelton.
