Kelley Scores Twice, Women's Hockey Scoots Past Sacred Heart, 3-1

WINCHENDON, Mass. (2/4/23) – It was all said and done following the first 20-minuts of action for the franklin Pierce women's hockey team, as they cruised their way to a 3-1 victory over NEWHA opponent Sacred Heart University on Friday night at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.

Women's hockey pushes their unbeaten streak to five in a row, moving to 12-12-3 (9-7-3 NEWHA) on the season with the win at home. Sacred Heart drops to 13-14-2 (10-8-1 NEWHA) with the loss.

Sophomore forward Mikayla Kelley (Eagan, Minn.) opened the scoring for Pierce 5:51 into the contest when she tipped home a shot off the draw by senior defender Stephanie Caban (Fitchburg, Mass.), beating Sacred Heart's Carly Greene glove side. At 17:14 of the frame, Kelley would double the Raven lead with her second of the night on the power play, roofing a wrister from the low-right circle, bringing her season total to 10 goals. However, two wasn't enough for fellow sophomore Cailey McLaughlin (McLean, Va.), who extended the Raven lead to 3-0 with just 00:04 left in the period, once more on the power play. Junior Emilie Prive (Morrisville, Vt.) was credited with the assist on the goal, which would send Pierce into the second period with the three-goal cushion.

Only one other goal would be scored the remainder of the evening, coming off the stick of Sacred Heart forward Julianna Koman on a second-chance wrister from the right circle, also on the power play, making it 3-1. From there, it would be a back and forth defensive battle, all the way up until the final horn.

Raven starter Jill Hertl (Highland Park, Ill.) claimed the win in goal for Pierce, stopping 32-of33 shots thrown her way in the effort. Pioneer's starter Carly Green took the loss on the night, making 25 saves on 28 shots faced. In total, the Ravens finished 2-of-5 on the man advantage.

Women's hockey will go for the weekend sweep over Sacred Heart with a 4:00 p.m. faceoff tomorrow (2/4/23) evening, right back at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
