Prive Scores Last Second Winner in OT, Women's Hockey Stuns Saint Anselm, 3-2

WINCHENDON, Mass. (1/28/23) - It was a magical evening at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena, as junior forward Emilie Prive (Morrisville, Vt.) completed the Ravens' comeback effort over Saint Anselm College, securing the game-winning goal for women's hockey with just 0.9 seconds remaining on the way to a 3-2 victory.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to (11-12-3, 8-7-3 NEWHA), while Saint Anselm steps back to (12-15-3, 11-6-3 NEWHA) with the loss.

The Hawks struck first late in the first period (16:24). Claire Weber fired a wrister from the right circle that tucked underneath the crossbar. There was some confusion at first as play resumed after the goal with the Hawks players celebrating, but the goal was eventually awarded after the next whistle and a conference between the officials. Brooklyn Pancoast got the credit for the assist on Weber's 2nd goal of the season. Just 1:28 after Weber's goal, Tyra Turner snuck a shot through the short side of the Raven netminder in front of traffic to make it a 2-0 Hawks lead.

The Ravens finally found their way onto the scoreboard just past the midway point in the second period, after Cailey McLaughlin (McLean, Va.) fired home a wrister from the left circle that beat Hawks netminder Allie Kelley over the right shoulder, cutting the lead down to 2-1 with 13:09 left. Senior defender Stefanie Caban (Fitchburg, Mass.) notched an assist on what was McLaughlin's 2nd goal of the season, which would also be the only scoring of the frame as the score would hold out at 2-1 entering the third period.

After a defensive stalemate for most of the third period, the Ravens eventually found the equalizer on a power play goal from freshman Avery Farrell (Ostego, Minn.) 12:39 into the period. The goal came after Farrell fired a wrist shot from the mid-slot that found its way past Allie Kelley high glove side, with McLaughlin and Claire Casey (Superior, Wisc.) each assisting on the tying goal, which was her 10th of the season.

Neither team could score to win the game in regulation, so extra time was needed. This was fitting due to last season's occurrence on this date (1/28/22), when Ava Kison secured the OT-winner against the Hawks in a 3-2 victory at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. In a hope to repeat history, the Ravens battled the Hawks for every inch of free space on the ice, creating high-quality scoring chances end-to-end. However, both goalies stood tall for their respective squads, seemingly forcing another tie situation. Nevertheless, the Ravens remained persistent, and battled to the literal last second.

Cassidy Jones (Stillwater, Minn.) led the rush in the final moments of overtime, when her initial shot went wide of the net, forcing Allie Kelley to come out of her net to play the crazy ricochet off the glass. Off the bounce, senior defender Bethany Ross (Canton, Mich.) inched the puck towards Emilie Prive, who cashed in on a wide-open net to win the game with Kelley out of position, icing the win for the Ravens 3-2.

Freshman newcomer Olivia Klunowski (Toronto, Ontario) made her official debut in net for the Ravens, earning the victory in her first ever collegiate start where she turned away 37-of-39 shots faced. Allie Kelley shouldered the loss for the Hawks, making 38 saves on 41 shots.

The Ravens are back in action next weekend with a Friday night matchup against Sacred Heart (2/3) at 7:30 PM at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
