Women's Hockey Breaks Even at Saint Anselm, 4-4

MANCHESTER, N.H. (1/27/23) – It took more than 60 minutes to decide the outcome of Friday afternoon's Franklin Pierce women's hockey matchup at Saint Anselm College, but a winner was never crowned as the Ravens and Hawks battled it out to a 4-4 draw at Sullivan Arena.

The Ravens holds out at 10-12-3 (7-7-3 NE10) following the tie, while the Hawks move to 12-14-3 (11-5-3 NE10).

Saint Anselm started and ended the first period on a high note, opening the scoring just 00:19 in on a goal by forward Audrey Jackson with the help of Tyra Turner and defender Kenadie Cooper. At the other end of the frame, the Hawks would expand their lead to 2-0 in the final minute as first year forward Brooklyn Pancoast picked the top corner from the high slot, capping off the Hawk offense in the opening stanza.

The Ravens made it a new hockey game at the 6:57 mark of the second period as sophomore Mikayla Kelley (Eagan, Minn.) finally broke the ice for Pierce with her eighth of the season. The goal came after a keep-in off a failed Saint Anselm clear by senior defender Bethany Ross (Canton, Mich.), who sent the puck toward the Hawk net to set up Kelley off the sizeable rebound, cutting the deficit to 2-1. It would be the only goal of the period as the host Hawks held a 31-21 shots advantage through the first 40-minutes played.

The third period did not fail to entertain as a total of five goals were scored between the two clubs. To kick it off, the Ravens took advantage of their fourth powerplay chance of the evening, and tied the game up at 2-2 on a third-effort goal by junior Jenna Ruiz (Webster, Wis.). At 12:09 of the third, the Ravens then claimed their first lead of the evening off a bounce-in shot by senior defender Stefanie Caban (Fitchburg, Mass.), with Avery Farrell (Otsego, Minn.) and Mikayla Kelley assisting on the effort, to make it 3-2 Pierce. However, it did not take very long before Saint Anselm provided the response, knotting it up at 3-3 on a goal by Gabrielle Huson just over 00:40 seconds later.

The Ravens continued to look for a way to win nearing the end of regulation, as junior forward Claire Casey (Superior, Wis.) placed them back in the lead off a tough angle shot that deflected into the net off Hawks' netminder Allie Kelley, making it 4-3 with under three minutes to play. Despite this, it was déjà vu for the Ravens as Saint Anselm answered the call shortly after, tying it back up at 4-4 just over a minute later. Regulation would end with the two teams deadlocked.

Through overtime, neither team would find the back of the net to claim the win, and the game would conclude as a 4-4 stalemate.

Raven starter Jill Hertl (Highland Park, Ill.) saw her fair share of action in the effort, making 45 saves on 49 total shots faced through 64:56 minutes played. Saint Anselm's Allie Kelley was also kept busy in net, and made 39 saves on 43 shots.

It will be the Ravens' turn to host tomorrow (1/28) evening as they wrap up the home-and-home series with Saint Anselm, with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
