Women's Hockey Unable to Catch Up in 4-2 Loss at LIU

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (12/10/22) – Goals in the first and third periods sophomore Cailey McLaughlin (McLean, Va.) and Jenna Ruiz (Webster, Wis.) kept the Ravens in the fight, but ultimately proved to be insufficient as Women's Hockey fell to Long Island University (LIU), 4-2 to close out the weekend series.

The Ravens managed a tie through the weekend with the Sharks, but fall to 7-9-1 (5-5-1 NEWHA) overall with the loss. LIU remains unbeaten through their past 10 games, and improve to 11-6-1 (10-1-1 NEWHA) this season.

It took all of 4:30 for Cailey McLaughlin to open the scoring for Franklin Pierce, notching her first goal of the season with assists from junior Emilie Prive (Morrisville, Vt.) and Lindsey Dumond (Hampton, N.H.). However, LIU would even the odds with just 0:38 seconds left in the first period on a powerplay goal from defender Sasha Hartje.

At the 11:52 mark of the second period, LIU forward Carrigan Umpherville scored the go-ahead goal, unassisted, to put the Sharks up 2-1. Over the course of the period, the Ravens held the total shots advantage over the Sharks 6-5, but would come up empty on the scoresheet. As a result, LIU would carry the one-goal advantage into the third period.

Forward Abby Latorella added the insurance goal for LIU just 2:36 into the final frame, putting the Sharks ahead 3-1. Following a successful penalty kill, Jenna Ruiz cashed in on her 9th goal of the season and third of the series, giving the Ravens a fighting chance now down 3-2 nearing the three minute mark. With the goalie pulled, the Ravens couldn't hang on as LIU's Abby Latorella put the game on ice with the empty netter, finalizing the score at 4-2.

Freshman goaltender Jill Hertl (Highland Park, Ill.) turned aside 20-of-23 in the effort for the Ravens, while LIU's Tindra Holm made 22 saves for the win.

Women's Hockey returns home to Jason Ritchie Ice Arena this coming Friday (12/16) and Saturday (12/17) for two-game series with Union College, with Friday's opener beginning at 7:30 p.m.
