Offense Struggles as Women’s Hockey Drops Weekend Opener at St. Thomas (Minn.), 3-0

Ravens women's ice hockey

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. (October 14, 2022) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's hockey team could not get much of anything going on Friday afternoon, on the front end of a non-conference weekend series at St. Thomas (Minn.). The Ravens were outshot 37-11 at St. Thomas Ice Arena, and a trio of third-period goals for the home team spelled trouble in a 3-0 loss. Junior goaltender Suzette Faucher (Middleton, Wis.) made 33 saves in defeat for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-2-0, while St. Thomas improves to 1-2-0. The two teams will wrap up their weekend set at 7 p.m. (EDT) on Saturday at St. Thomas Ice Arena.

Franklin Pierce really struggled through the first two periods, as the Ravens were outshot 10-2 in the first and 17-1 in the second. The levy finally broke midway through the second frame, as St. Thomas got on the board on the rush at the 9:36 mark. After a long outlet pass by sophomore Maddy Clough, junior Brieja Parent headed a 2-on-1 into the offensive end on the right side. She put her centering feed on the stick of senior Maija Almich, who one-timed her first of the season home right out front.

The Tommies would strike again at 11:52. Freshmen Kate Haug and Molly Grundhoffer combined to work the puck free in the right-wing corner and get it to the stick of Grundhoffer in the right circle. She carried to the edge of the circle and slipped a backhand shot inside the left post for her first collegiate goal.

A power-play marker at 16:21 made it 3-0 heading into the second intermission. Clough took the original shot from the left point, which was turned aside by Faucher. The rebound came off the skate of sophomore Abby Promersberg on the doorstep, and deflected to graduate student Anna Solheim, who finished off her first of the campaign at the left post.

The Ravens got things under control in the third period, which saw the shots 10-9 in their favor, but they were unable to make any inroads on a comeback attempt. Six of Franklin Pierce's 11 shots in the game came on the team's first of two power-play chances, which came in the middle of the final stanza. St. Thomas had the one second-period power-play tally on four opportunities in the game.

Faucher (0-2-0) finished with 34 saves against 37 shots on her goal in the loss. At the other end of the ice, sophomore Saskia Maurer (1-1-0) stopped all 11 shots she faced to pick up the win for St. Thomas, along with her first career shutout.
