Women’s Ice Hockey Rolls at Post, 7-0

Marissa Massaro

SHELTON, Conn. (October 22, 2021) -- Coming off a 4-0 win last Saturday, the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team really kicked the offense into high gear on the road on Friday afternoon. Seven different goal-scorers found the back of the net as the Ravens cruised to a 7-0 victory in non-conference play over Post, at Sports Center of Connecticut. Sophomore Claire Casey (Superior, Wis.) was the final of the seven scorers, to chalk up the first goal of her collegiate career.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-3-0, while Post falls to 2-2-0. The two teams still have four New England Women's Hockey Alliance contests on the docket this winter, including two at Post on Nov. 19-20, and two at Franklin Pierce on Feb. 11-12.

Though Franklin Pierce piled up a 17-5 advantage in shots in the first period -- on the way to a 60-21 margin for the game -- it took until the final five minutes of the frame to open the scoring. The Ravens started things off on the power play at 15:27. From the right-wing wall, freshman Geno Hendrickson (Warroad, Minn.) sent the puck to the top of the zone for junior Stefanie Caban (Fitchburg, Mass.). Caban took a shot from the middle of the blue line and graduate student Marissa Massaro (Brockton, Mass.) deflected it home at the top of the crease for her first goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce pushed the lead to 2-0 just 42 seconds later, at 16:09. On the left side, junior Katelyn Brightbill (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Emilie Prive (Morrisville, Vt.) combined to work the puck out front, where junior Jenna Ruiz (Webster, Wis.) eventually jammed home her first of the campaign.

The Ravens added two more in the first five minutes of the second, to make it four goals in a span of 8:49. First, junior Bethany Ross (Canton, Mich.) held the puck in at the right point and threw it towards the net, where fellow junior Cassidy Jones (Stillwater, Minn.) corralled it and put away her first of the year at 2:02. Just over two minutes later, at 4:16, it was the second of the season for junior Ava Kison (Eau Claire, Wis.), as she capped some good puck movement on the power play. From the left point, Caban sent the puck to the bottom of the left circle for Brightbill. Brightbill in turn worked it into the slot for Kison's one-time finish.

Franklin Pierce tacked on three more in the third to win going away, 7-0. Early, junior Becca Kniss (Eden Prairie, Minn.) took control of a breakout, powered down the right side, drove to the net and slipped her second of the season between the pads of Post sophomore goaltender Lexi Levy at 2:19. Sophomore Brooke Remington (Scandia, Minn.) later made a long rush of her own, after Ruiz won possession in her own end. Once in the left circle at the other end, Remington faked outside, cut back inside, carried in to the slot and picked the top-right corner for her second of the year at 5:30. Casey capped the scoring at 16:22, as she snapped home a shot from the left circle for her first collegiate goal.

Sophomore Suzette Faucher (Middleton, Wis.) stopped all 17 shots she faced over the opening 56:22 to pick up the win (2-1-0) in the Franklin Pierce crease. She has now stopped 99 of the 100 shots she has faced so far this season and has a personal shutout streak of 159:07. Freshman Nettie Kimble (Bemidji, Minn.) came on for the final 3:38 and stopped four shots in her collegiate debut to finish off the shutout.

At the other end of the ice, Levy (0-1-0) made 53 saves against 60 shots in a losing effort in her collegiate debut.

It was the only game of the week for the Ravens, who open NEWHA play next weekend with a home-and-home series against Saint Anselm on Oct. 29-30. The two teams will meet at Saint Anselm on Friday at 7 p.m., and at Franklin Pierce on Saturday at 3 p.m.
