Baker, Ketterman Lead Way in Women’s Ice Hockey’s 5-2 Win at SUNY Canton

Doucette (1-1-2), Flynn (0-2-2) add two points each

Baker Baker notched her second multiple-goal game of the season on Friday night at SUNY Canton.

CANTON, N.Y. (December 12, 2014) – Junior forward Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) and sophomore forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) scored twice each on Friday night to lead the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team to a 5-2 road win over SUNY Canton in non-conference play at Roos House. Sophomore forward Lora Ardoin scored both goals in defeat for SUNY Canton.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 8-2-1 (5-1-0 ECAC East), while SUNY Canton falls to 1-10-1. The Ravens and Roos will meet against Saturday at 4 p.m. at Roos House to finish the two-game weekend series.

The beleaguered Franklin Pierce power play opened the scoring on Friday night, as the Ravens converted on their first opportunity of the game, snapping an 0-for-17 streak in the process. Baker tracked down a loose puck to the right-wing side of the net, brought it out front and beat the goaltender stick-side for her seventh goal of the campaign. Junior forwards Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) and Francesca Paciello (Clinton, N.Y.) picked up the assists as the whole line got in on the goal at the 8:09 mark.

The Ravens struck twice in the first three minutes of the middle stanza to expand the lead to 3-0. Baker picked the top-left corner just 19 seconds into the period on a quick rush up the ice for her second goal of the night, unassisted. It was the second multiple-goal outing in three games for Baker, who would finish the night with seven points in the last three games (5-2-7) after tallying just five points in the season's first eight contests.

Just 1:57 later, at the 2:16 mark, Ketterman put home her seventh goal of the year. She took a pass from sophomore defenseman Katie Flynn (East Sandwich, Mass.), deked around SUNY Canton freshman goaltender Rebecca DiNardo and put a backhander into the net.

The teams would trade a quartet of goals in the third period to create the 5-2 final. SUNY Canton got things started, just 47 seconds in, in the immediate aftermath of a failed power-play attempt. Sophomore defenseman Abbey Diabo wound and fired from the point, while Ardoin was stationed off the left post to redirect her third goal of the season to the back of the net.

The Ravens responded just 64 seconds later, as Baker capped her three-point night by setting up Doucette to finish off her fifth goal of the year from the left circle. Flynn chalked up her second assist of the night on the play as well.

Franklin Pierce pushed the lead as high 5-1 by striking for another power-play goal at the 11:22 mark. Ketterman put home a rebound for her second goal of the night to tie Baker for the team lead with eight goals on the season. Junior forwards Bryana Harron (Woburn, Mass.) and Haylea Barbieri (Plainville, Mass.) picked up the assists on the play.

SUNY Canton capped the scoring with just nine seconds to play, at the 19:51 mark. Ardoin's second of the night came from the slot, after freshman forward McKayla Duffy circled behind the net and slipped a pass out front.

Sophomore goaltender Noelle White (Corona, Calif.) started in the crease for Franklin Pierce, made 16 saves against 17 shots and picked up the win (6-0-0) before leaving just after the midway point of the third period. Freshman Madison Murray (Berkley, Mich.) made her collegiate debut, logged the final 8:38 for the Ravens and made three saves against four shots. At the other end of the ice, DiNardo went the distance in goal for SUNY Canton, finished with 28 saves against 33 shots and suffered the loss (1-6-0).
