PREVIEW: Women’s Golf Looking for Second Championship in Three Years

RINDGE, N.H. (October 11, 2019) The Franklin Pierce University women's golf team started their 2019-20 season with a bang winning all four of their fall tournaments as the team hopes they put together two more solid rounds at the 2019 Northeast-10 Conference Championship hosted by Le Moyne College Sunday and Monday.

The crimson and gray, the pre-tournament favorites as voted by the league head coaches' are hoping to bring their second conference championship in three years back to Rindge and earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II East Super Regional. Pierce will take part in a practice round on Saturday before teeing off on the Shenendoah Golf Course at Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, N.Y. Since the start of the NE10 Women's Golf Championship five years ago, Franklin Pierce has tallied four second-place finishes and one title.

 

SCOUTING THE RAVENS

Pierce has taken part in four tournaments on the year. They have won every tournament and have never trailed after the first round. At the season-opening Saint Rose Fall Invitational, FPU tallied a 649 (+73) besting runner-up Southern New Hampshire University by 16 strokes. The Ravens momentum carried over to the Le Moyne Invitational and again they bettered the Penmen firing a 618 (+50) score. A week later at the home FPU Fall Invitational, FPU bested Assumption College by 11, shooting a combined 627 (+51) and two weeks ago at the Penmen Fall Invitational, the Ravens narrowly beat Stonehill College by four strokes combining for a 628 (+58). Last year, FPU won only one tournament in the fall and brought home two team championships in April.

The Ravens are led by freshman standout Jinnapat Rittawee (Kanchanaburi, Thailand). Rittawee has won three individual tournament championships and has only finished lower than first once. She also has been honored by the conference with three Women's Golfer of the Week awards and four Rookie of the Week selections.

 

HOW THE RAVENS LINEUP

Franklin Pierce travels to the Empire State and the Shenendoah Golf Course, a par 72, 5,822-yard course with the following five-golfer lineup.

 

1. Freshman Jinnapat Rittawee - Tee Times: 10/13: 1st Tee, 1:48 p.m., 10/14: TBD

Rittawee has three individual medalist honors at the Saint Rose Fall Invitational (156, +12), the Le Moyne Fall Invitational (143, +1) and the Penmen Fall Invitational (147, +3). She has dropped strokes off her first-round total in three of the four tournaments. Her low round of the year is a 71 (-1) at the Penmen Fall Invitational.

 

2. Sophomore Christine Songcuan (Lancaster, Calif.) - Tee Times: 10/13: 1st Tee, 1:39 p.m., 10/14: TBD

Songcuan, a one-time NE10 Weekly Honor Roll selection this season will compete from the second slot. She has one top-10 finish on the year, placing eighth at the Penmen Fall Invitational at 158 (+14) and she turned in her low round of the year in the second round at 78 (+6). Songcuan tied for 11th at the Le Moyne Fall Invitational (165, +23).

 

3. Senior Zoey Yamamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii) - Tee Times: 10/13: 1st Tee, 1:30 p.m., 10/14: TBD

Yamamoto, an All-Championship Team honoree last year and a two-time NE10 Weekly Honor Roll golfer this season makes her fourth appearance in the conference championship. This season she has two top-five finishes including one other in the top-10. At the Le Moyne Fall Invitational, Yamamoto was the individual runner up tallying a 149 (+7) scorecard as she dropped one stroke off her round one score. At the FPU Fall Invitational, Yamamoto shot a 153 (+9) including a season-low 73 (+1).

 

4. Freshman Alia Godek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) - Tee Times: 10/13: 1st Tee, 1:21 p.m., 10/14: TBD

Godek, a two-time Weekly Honor Roll honoree makes the trip for her first NE10 Championship. The freshman has one finish within the top-five and a total of three in the top-10. At the season-opening Saint Rose Fall Invitational, Godek tied for fourth place producing a two-round total 159 (+15). She took off five strokes from her day one score putting home a season-low 77 (+5). Godek finished eighth at the Le Moyne Fall Invitational (163, +21) and tied for ninth at the Penmen Fall Invitational (161, +17).   

 

5. Senior Taylor Hartley (Canton, Ga.) - Tee Times: 10/13: 1st Tee, 1:12 p.m., 10/14: TBD

Hartley, an All-Championship Team member last year and a one-time Weekly Honor Roll athlete this season will round out the Ravens golfers. Hartley has one top-10 finish this year at the FPU Women's Fall Invitational combining to shoot a 158 (+14) for eighth place. She turned in a 78 (+6) card during her second go around through the course.
