Offense Stalls Out for Women's Basketball Versus Assumption, 57-24

RINDGE, N.H. (1/26/23) – It was a frustrating evening for the Franklin Pierce women's basketball program on Thursday night as they dropped a 57-24 decision to the visiting Assumption University Greyhounds at The Fieldhouse. For the Ravens, it was their lowest point totals of the season.

The loss comes as the fourth straight for the Ravens, who drop to 6-13 (2-10 NE10) on the season. The Greyhounds continue to sit atop the conference's women's basketball standings with their fifth straight win, improving to 18-2 (11-2 NE10).

In the first quarter, Assumption spent the first five minutes slowly working their way up to an 11-3 advantage. Through the entirety of the first ten minutes, Pierce found little success from the floor with just two field goals scored from junior Collette Mulderig (Scranton, Pa.) and freshman Leana Heitmann (Pompey, N.Y.). However, trailing 13-5 entering the second quarter, the Raven offense began to show signs of life after a tone-setting layup by Ines Gimenez Monserrat (Mallorca, Spain), setting Pierce up for what would be their highest scoring quarter of the contest. With under three minutes to play in the half, freshman Kenzie Sirowich (Seymour, Conn.) went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in addition to a layup at the one minute mark, scoring a total of six unanswered points for Pierce to send them to the locker rooms trailing 26-18.

For the Ravens, the second half provided little to no relief as they were held to a measly six points. Through the third quarter, Assumption pulled away on a 14-0 run before junior forward Ashley Smith (Holden, Mass.) could end the scoreless drought for Pierce. Despite the two points, Assumption continued to pile it on with another 6-0 run to close out the third, jumping ahead 46-20 entering the final frame.

Assumption would outscore Pierce 11-4 in the fourth, closing out the 57-24 final score.

From the floor, Pierce shot their lowest percentage of the season going 9-of-53 (17.0%) while also coming up empty from behind the arc, shooting 0-of-13. Kenzie Sirowich led the offensive output for Pierce with eight points scored, along with five rebounds and four steals.

Women's Basketball will remain at home for their upcoming matinee matchup with the University of New Haven (10-7, 7-6 NE10) on Saturday, January 28th at 1:30 p.m. from The Fieldhouse.
