Women's Basketball Cannot Solve Second Half Woes, Fall to Saint Rose, 76-57

RINDGE, N.H. (1/14/2023) - In a game that was close through the first half, things took a drastic turn for the worse for the Franklin Pierce women's basketball team as they were outscored 39-25 in the second half, leading to a 76-57 loss to the College of Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon.

Franklin Pierce falls to 6-11 (2-8 NE10) overall with the loss, while Saint Rose improves to 8-6 (5-4 NE10). The Ravens have now lost two consecutive games, and have fallen in their last five against Northeast-10 conference matchups.

In the first quarter, both teams traded baskets as the game was tied at 10-all through the first five minutes. Junior Ines Gimenez Monserrat (Mallorca, Spain) led the quarter's offense with six points, all of which came just 30 seconds apart on consecutive three-pointers. Anna Badosa Soler (Girona, Spain) finished close behind with five points scored, including a late three-point basket with just 00:18 seconds left, to keep the Ravens in close to the Golden Knights, who led 20-17 at the end of the first quarter.

The Golden Knights opened the second quarter with a quick 7-0 run to extend their lead to double digits. In an effort to claw back into the game and shave the deficit, sophomore guard Keely Toohey (McCrae, Australia) drove in a layup at the 7:56 mark of the frame. Yet, whenever the Ravens seemed to have an answer, the Golden Knights responded on the opposite end to maintain their advantage. The Ravens would not show significant signs of life until the final two minutes of the half, where they wrapped up the second quarter on a 6-0 scoring run. The effort would narrow the deficit, but not pull them to within decent range as the Golden Knights entered the break leading 37-32.

As has been the case often this season for the Ravens, the second half continued to be a struggle as they failed to find consistent offense. To open the bottom half, Saint Rose slowly began to expand upon their lead, outscoring Franklin Pierce by a 15-8 margin. The Golden Knights later extended their lead back into double digits as the third quarter clock ran down, and would carry a comfortable 52-40 into the final quarter.

The Golden Knights pulled into their largest lead of the afternoon with an early three-pointer to begin the fourth, 55-40. Over the course of the next four minutes, Ana Badosa Soler went on to secure the next seven points scored for the Ravens. Despite this, it failed to make a significant dent in the deficit as the defense continued to surrender points on the other end, specifically from behind the arc, with the Knights collecting six threes in the second half. The result led to the Golden Knights outscoring the Ravens 24-17 in the final quarter, and the 76-57 loss.

Ana Badosa Soler led the day with 14 points scored, shooting 5-of-8 ()from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Freshman Sara Macary (Naugatuck, Conn.) also broke double-digit points for the Ravens, shooting 4-of-11 from the field with 12 points scored, also registering a perfect record from free throws (4-for-4). As a team, Pierce shot 21-of-49 (35.6%) 68). 3

The Ravens hit the road next Saturday, January 21st, where they will head south to Springfield, Massachusetts to take on American International College for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off.
