Scoring Runs Dictate The Outcome as Women's Basketball Slips at Adelphi, 75-63

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (1/10/23) – The offense regained some of its form for the Franklin Pierce women's basketball team, but could not complete the task as the Ravens suffered a 75-63 setback to host Adelphi University in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown on Tuesday evening.

The loss bumps the Ravens down to 6-10 (2-7 NE10) on the season, while the Panthers even out at 7-7 (4-5 NE10) with the triumph.

The first quarter was filled with lengthy scoring runs for both sides, with Pierce fighting from behind right from the get-go. After quickly falling behind 10-3, the Ravens staged their largest run of the first half with seven consecutive points off of shots from freshman Ana Badosa Soler (Girona, Spain) and junior Ines Gimenez Monserrat (Mallorca, Spain), tying the contest up at 10-10. However, Adelphi responded with successive three-point baskets to reclaim the lead, and would remain in that position throughout the remainder of the first half. Through both the first and second quarters, the Ravens shot 6-of-18 in field goals offensively, and surrendered 21 points to the Panthers defensively to carry a 42-32 deficit to the locker room at the break.

As was the case in the first half, the Ravens quickly fell victim to a half-opening opponent run. Over the first 2:13 of the half, Adelphi continued to pull further away on the scoreboard with the first seven points scored, forcing an early 30 second timeout by the Ravens. Out of the pause, freshman Sara Macary (Naugatuck, Conn.) sent home a two-point jumper, which was shortly followed by another from junior Gabriela Sanchez-Parodi (Canary Islands, Spain) to spark a 9-0 run by Pierce. Despite their continued efforts to fight from behind, the Ravens struggled to defend the oncoming Adelphi attack, and were only able to shave one point off their previous deficit entering the final quarter.

For the first time on the evening, the Ravens secured the first set of points of a quarter following a jump shot from Ana Badosa Soler just under a minute in. However, the Panthers remained true to the task and forged ahead with an 8-2 run midway through the frame, ultimately pushing the Ravens aside for good on their way to the 75-63 final.

Ana Badosa Soler registered double-digit points for the her second straight game, scoring a new season-best 17 points to lead the Raven offense on the floor, additionally capturing seven rebounds in the effort. Sara Macary and Ines Gimenez Monserrat each totaled 14 points for the Ravens, as the team shot 23-of-65 (35.4%) from the floor and 3-of-12 from behind the arc. The Ravens also improved with their ball control, and committed a season-low 12 turnovers in the decision.

Women's basketball returns home for more in-conference competition when they welcome the College of Saint Rose (6-6, 4-4 NE10) to The Fieldhouse on Saturday, January 14, opening a weekend doubleheader with a 1:30 p.m. tipoff.
