Women's Basketball Downed at New Haven, 79-51

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (12/3/22) – The offensive production continued to struggle for the Franklin Pierce women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Ravens fell on the road, 79-51 to host University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action.

With the loss, women's basketball drops to 3-5 (1-3 NE10) overall, having now lost two straight contests. The Chargers improve to 4-2 (2-2 NE10) on the season with the win, and remain unbeaten at home.

Despite claiming the first two points of the opening frame, New Haven dominated throughout the remainder, outscoring the Ravens 20-4. The resulting situation put the Ravens in a 20-8 hole entering the second quarter, but would return to the floor with more energy early on. Junior center Ashley Smith (Holden, Mass.) would kickoff an 8-0 run by the Ravens with a jumper 30 seconds in, which would then be followed with consecutive threes from freshman Edisha Galan (Manchester, Conn.) and Leanna Heitmann (Pompey, N.Y.).  For the remainder of the half, the two teams would continue to trade chances from all spots on the floor, with the Charger lead holding out for a 39-28 score at the break.

Entering the third quarter, the Ravens saw managed to secure early points from the free-throw line, but would be unable to halt a relentless attach from three-range by the Chargers. In a span of two minutes, the Chargers would continue to pull further away with an 8-0 run of their own, limiting the Ravens to just three points scored through the final five minutes.

The lackluster scoring by the Ravens didn't see an improvement entering the final period, scoring only three points in the first four minutes of play. At the 5:26 mark, freshman guard Kenzie Sirowich (Seymour, Conn.) was able to knock down a three-shot from above the arc, which was promptly followed by a steal and score by Ines Gimenez Monserrat (Mallorca, Spain), securing the only consecutive points scored of the quarter. In the end, the Chargers kept piling on the points, and emerged with the 79-51 victory.

Freshman guard Kenzie Sirowich (Seymour, Conn.) and junior forward Ines Gimenez Monserrat  (Mallorca, Spain) tallied double-digit points apiece to lead the offense for Pierce, scoring 14 and 12 respectively. Junior center Ashley Smith (Holden, Mass.) added nine points along with a team-best six rebounds off the board, to go along with a pair of blocked shots. As a team, the Ravens finished 17-of-47 (36.2%) from the floor, but found decent success from above the arc hitting 11-of-14 (78.6%) from three-range.

The NE10 schedule continues for women's basketball on Tuesday (12/6) evening, where they will travel to in-state rival Saint Anselm College for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff in Manchester, New Hampshire.
