Balanced Attack Propels Women’s Basketball Past Wilmington (Del.), 69-57

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (November 14, 2021) -- It was four in double digits on Sunday afternoon for the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team, as the Ravens finished a perfect opening weekend with a 69-57 win over Wilmington (Del.) in neutral-site, non-conference play at College of Staten Island. Sophomores Ines Gimenez Monserrat (Mallorca, Spain) and Gisela Vazquez Segura (Igualada, Spain) led the way with 14 apiece, while seniors Lisa Sulejmani (Burlington, Vt.) and Emma Carter (Bristol, Vt.) contributed 13 each.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-0, while Wilmington falls to 0-2.

The Ravens used the first three quarters to build up a lead Wilmington could not overcome. Franklin Pierce posted a 20-14 edge in the first quarter, on the way to a 35-26 halftime lead. The Ravens continued to increase the lead with a 16-10 advantage in the third quarter. The Wildcats clawed a few points back via a 21-18 margin in the fourth quarter, but the Ravens were able to finish off the 69-57 victory.

The Ravens shot only 36.7% from the field (29-for-79), but were able to capitalize on 30 Wilmington turnovers to come away winners anyway. Vazquez Segura's 14 came on 6-for-15 from the floor, including 2-for-6 from behind the arc, while Gimenez Monserrat went 6-for-10 from the field on the way to her 14. The former added six rebounds and five assists, while the latter filled out her line with five rebounds and five steals.

Meanwhile, it was 13 points on 6-for-13 shooting for Sulejmani, who collected six rebounds along the way. Carter's 13 points came on 6-for-14 from the floor. Senior Rylee Skinner (Leominster, Mass.) added eight points and seven rebounds off the bench.

On the other side of the ball, Wilmington put four players in double digits as well, led by 14 points on 7-for-12 shooting from freshman Daja Claiborne, and 12 points on 5-for-9 from the floor from freshman Jade Roberts. Claiborne made it a double-double by hauling in a game-best 10 rebounds as well.

Junior Emily Ansah was able to put together double-double as well, off the bench for the Wildcats, as she snagged 10 rebounds to go with 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Senior Sabreen Muslim rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points on 3-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the line, and narrowly missed a double-double of her own, with nine rebounds.

The Ravens are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Post for a non-conference contest at 5:30 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
