Spread Out Scoring, Stifling Defense Not Enough as Panthers Scratch Past Ravens

GARDEN CITY, N.J (January 4, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University Ravens held Northeast-10 Conference opponent Adelphi University to their second lowest shooting percentage of the season (32.3%) as the Crimson and Grey dropped a 66-60 contest to the host Panthers on Wednesday night. The victory, Adelphi's eighth in a row, improves them to 12-2 overall and they remain undefeated in conference play. The loss sends FPU to 2-11, 0-8 NE10.

Reigning NE10 Weekly Honor Roll selection freshman guard Cameryn Wilson (Newport News, Va.) led FPU with nine points in 26 minutes off the bench while recording five boards, three steals, two assists and a block. Jemma Thacker (Nairne, South Australia) matched Wilson's point total and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.

Every player cracked the scoring column for the Ravens as no athlete scored less than five points. FPU had the superior post presence in the contest as they scored 30 points in the low post to their opponents 14. Adelphi relied heavily on the three-ball as they chucked up 28 attempts from long range as they connected on only seven attempts (25.0%).

On the offensive end, the Panthers outrebounded the Ravens by a 17-to-8 margin, but the Ravens held the second chance points to a minimum as they outscored Adelphi 13-to-9 when given an extra possession.

Sierra Clark played the whole contest for the Panthers as she tallied a game-high 20 points and 10 caroms to go along with three assists, two steals and two blocks.

The Ravens scored six consecutive points to start the contest as Alison Palma (Stamford, Conn.) cleaned up a missed layup and put the offensive rebound up and in for the opening points. Senior forward Mikayla Deguire (Watervilet, N.Y.) and sophomore Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) converted layups to push the lead to 6-0 three minutes into the quarter and forced the hosts to stop play with a timeout.

Simone Hobdy got her squad on the board as she buried two freebies from the charity stripe. Hobdy's markers were the start of an 8-0 Panther binge that put them ahead 8-6, which was their first lead. Kelsey Mayo (Oakland, Maine) ended the Adelphi run by banking in a layup and knocking down a free throw to compete the old fashioned three-point play to regain the advantage to her team's side. Trailing by three before the end of the stanza, Thacker rained in a three-ball to tie the score at 12 all, however Natalie Fekula hit two free throws to put her team up 14-12 at the end of one.

In the second quarter, both teams swapped possessions and points throughout the first five minutes of the period and it continued during the final minutes. Mayo found Thacker sitting in the left wing and fed her teammate the rock. Thacker corralled the ball and swished a three-ball to regain the lead, 21-19 with 4:11 left.

The Panthers outscored the guests 7-2 over the final four minutes with the key bucket being a Calli Balfour step-back three pointer. Adelphi headed into the half with a three-point 26-23 advantage.

The Crimson and Grey's defensive unit held Adelphi to a 9-of-35 (25.7%) shooting performance in the first half.

Adelphi built a seven point lead after Balfour found Julia Gnieser for three with 6:12 left in the third that put their team ahead by seven 33-26. Four straight on buckets by freshman Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) and Deguire put the Ravens down one possession.

A 13-4 Adelphi run gave the Panthers their largest advantage of the game, 46-34 on the strength of a Gnieser three-ball. Two Palma freebies and a Middleton driving lay-in brought the deficit down to single figures as the buzzer sounded.

The Ravens ended the third on a 4-0 run and it continued into the new quarter as Mosley and Palma added buckets which cut the Adelphi lead to two possessions at 46-42. Adelphi responded with an 11-2 scoring binge of their own to take control of the contest 57-46 with 4:49 to go.

Franklin Pierce tallied six in a row with Middleton slashing through the ride side of the paint for the and1. She made the free throw as the Ravens only trailed by five, 57-25. On the next Adelphi possession after the rock was deflected out of bounds, Hobdy inbounded the ball to the right corner to a waiting Gnieser who hit a three to put her team ahead by eight with 2:30 to go.

Mosley had a chance to answer Gnieser with a three of her own, but she missed and Wilson snagged the offensive carom. Wilson passed the rock to Mosley who came up short on another layup attempt and Wilson came down with the board. She reset on the left wing then drove the paint and floated the rock into the hoop to cut the Panther lead to 60-54.

After a few free throws in the final minute, Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.) had a chance for a three-ball, but missed her attempt. Hobdy rimmed out both free throws as Campbell converted a jumper and a layup at the end of the quarter as the Ravens fell by a 66-60 score.
