Stonehill Streaks Past Pierce 61-43

RINDGE, N.H. (November 30, 2016) – Returning to Northeast-10 Conference play after a non-league victory on Sunday, the Franklin Pierce women's basketball team was beaten by Stonehill College 61-43 Wednesday evening in the Fieldhouse. With the win, the Skyhawks soar to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference while the Ravens drop to 2-5 and 0-4 NE-10.

The game was a sloppy affair that saw 42 combined turnovers between both teams. The Skyhawks outrebounded the Ravens by a 45-27 margin and kept possessions alive with 19 offensive caroms to the hosts 12. SC knocked down 22-of-58 (43.1%) of their field goal attempts while the Ravens connected on 17-of-51 (33.3%).

Stonehill guard Courtney Walsh scored a game-high 21 points with 15 of her markers coming from downtown (5-of-11, 45.4%). Walsh scored 14 of her 21 points in the first half and made 4-of-6 (66.7%) from long range. For the Crimson and Grey, Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.) led her team with 14 points, three assists and three boards.

Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) opened up the scoring as she sliced through the paint off an Alison Palma (Stamford, Conn.) screen to give FPU the early 2-0 lead. Stonehill took their first lead of the contest at the 7:50 mark when Walsh buried a three-pointer from the right wing.

The Ravens held their largest lead of the contest at four, 11-7 due to a Middleton coast-to-coast layup after a theft of Maty Diabate. About a minute later, freshman guard Kelsey Shaw threw a cross court chest pass to Walsh who drained a shot from deep to come within one, 11-10. However, Campbell knocked down a jumper for the last points of the quarter and the Ravens held a 13-10 lead after one.

Walsh tied up the contest on the second possession of the quarter showing off her long range prowess again. She then regained the advantage to her side with a floating layup from the baseline as the shot clock expired. The point trading continued as Palma posted up down low and scooped a layup off the glass to tie the game for the third time.

Stonehill ended the half with a momentum changing 13-0 run over the final 5:40 of the second. The signature play of the scoring binge was how Tayler Wornum made the first freebie, missed the second, Kate Ross grabbed the rebound, missed her layup attempt and Wornum corralled the rock and put the ball off the glass for third chance points. FPU headed into the intermission down 28-15.

The guests locked down on defense and built their double-digit lead to a game-high 18 points thanks to another Walsh three. Palma brought the deficit to single-digits at nine when she poured in both of her free throws, but that's the closest the Ravens would come.

Middleton had an all-around game for FPU scoring six points while coming up with four steals, grabbing three rebounds and handing out two assists. Kelsey Mayo (Oakland, Maine) chipped in eight points for the hosts. For Stonehill, junior forward Samantha Hyslip scored 17 points on 8-of-12 (66.7%) shooting to go along with three boards and the teams only stuff.

The Ravens return to the hardwood on Saturday when they host NE-10 foe Assumption College with tip-off set for 1:30 p.m.
