Women's Basketball Drops Adelphi in Final Minute for 66-61 Victory

RINDGE, N.H. (February 12, 2015) – The Franklin Pierce Women's Basketball team avenged their loss to Adelphi  Thursday evening at the Fieldhouse with four Ravens in double figures, including graduate student Jessica Hurd (Kegworth, England) who posted her sixth double-double. The Ravens came back from a deficit at halftime to take the 66-61 victory in the final minutes of the game.

With the win, the Ravens advance to 13-8 overall, and remain 10-7 in Northeast-10 play, while Adelphi falls to 21-3, while remaining 14-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

The score was tied 57-57 with just under two minutes to play. Junior Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) would sink two free throws to give the Ravens a 59-57 lead, but seconds later graduate student Anh-Dao Tran would post a layup to tie the game up once again 59-59. Hurd would post a three point play giving the Ravens the lead for the remainder of the game.

Senior Jenna Halaby would be fouled and sink both her free throws with just under a minute to play bringing the game within one point, 62-61. Junior Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) sunk both of her free throws seconds later to bring the game within three. Denying the Panthers a made basket, Charette would be sent to the foul line to bring the game within five with fewer than 15 seconds to go in the game to ensure the Raven victory.     

The Ravens held the lead until 10:32 in the first half when the game was tied by senior Ashley Gomez's three pointer, 9-9, sophomore Calli Balfour took the Panther lead with her three point play two minutes later. With just over six minutes to play in the first half, the Panthers began to pull away and ended the half leading by five, 24-19.

With 18:16 to play in the game, Adelphi led by 11, 30-19, but the Ravens would begin to chip away the lead and brought the game within five points by 16:33, 30-25. Senior Kelly Mannix netted back to back three pointers to regain the 11 point advantage for the Panthers.

Freshman Jemma Thacker (Aldgate, Australia) posted back to back three pointers at bring the game within one point by 10:40, 39-40. Adelphi would fight to keep their advantage, but the Ravens limited it to six points for the remainder of the game.

Bastian tied the game at 6:02 with a layup, 49-49, followed by a three point play to take the lead for the Ravens. Bastian scored nine points within three minute to keep the lead for the Ravens. However, by 1:56 the game would be tied up, with the favor going to the Ravens by the time the game was over.

Jenna Halaby had 11 points with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, while Kelly Mannix posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, adding a steal and 3 assists. Junior Samantha Brenner also added 10 points and 2 rebounds to the score for the Panthers.

Jessica Hurd posted her sixth double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds while adding 3 assists. Natalie Bastian had 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals, while Kara Charette had 16 points and 4 rebounds. Jemma Thacker also added 11 points and 6 rebounds. 

The Ravens return to their home court Saturday afternoon to take on Saint Anselm at noon in Northeast-10 Conference play.
