Sprint Football Puts Five on All-CSFL Teams, Has 14 Total Honored by League

RINDGE, N.H. (November 21, 2016) – Four First-Team selections led five All-Collegiate Sprint Football League selections for the Franklin Pierce University sprint football team, as announced Monday by the League office. In all, the Ravens had 14 players honored in the League's year-end awards.

Landing on the All-CSFL First Team were senior linebacker Josh Castro (Nashua, N.H.), senior defensive back Brandon Knight (Bronx, N.Y.), sophomore linebacker Andrew Pelkey (Winchendon, Mass.) and senior offensive lineman Franco Pizzarella (Methuen, Mass.), while sophomore offensive lineman Christopher Bogardus (Seymour, Conn.) was the lone Raven named to the All-CSFL Second Team. Franklin Pierce saw nine players earn All-CSFL Honorable Mention accolades: junior defensive back Ryan Becerra (Tempe, Ariz.), senior linebacker Andrew Jean (Irvington, N.J.), freshman linebacker Bailee Johns (Fitzwilliam, N.H.), junior defensive lineman Demitri Moreno (Alhambra, Calif.), freshman offensive lineman Jordan Clark (Leominster, Mass.), senior offensive lineman Jason Reid (Leominster, Mass.), freshman wide receiver Alex Revere (Boston, Mass.), freshman linebacker Matthew LoPresti (Chelmsford, Mass.) and senior wide receiver Alex Powell (Swampscott, Mass.).

Castro moves up a rung after a selection to the All-CSFL Second Team last season. He finished among the top 10 in the league with 7.0 tackles per game, as he amassed 49 tackles (31 solo) over the team's seven games. Along the way, Castro recorded 10.5 tackles for loss, totaling 37 yards, and collected 2.5 sacks, for a loss of 12 yards. He intercepted one pass and returned it 10 yards, broke up two passes, forced one fumble, recovered one fumble and blocked two kicks.

Knight earns his second straight First Team selection to cap his career, and also earned All-CSFL Honorable Mention honors as a sophomore. He collected seven pass break-ups on the season, which put him in a tie for eighth in the CSFL with 1.00 passes defended (interceptions plus break-ups) per game. Knight recorded 29 tackles (19 solo), including 1.5 tackles for loss of seven yards.

Pelkey finished the season sixth in the CSFL with 1.43 tackles for loss per game. On the season, he chalked up 33 tackles (19 solo), including 10 tackles for loss, which totaled 54 yards. Pelkey tallied 6.5 sacks for 34 lost yards and also forced a fumble along the way.

Pizzarella and Bogardus, along with Clark and Reid, were all honored for their work on the Ravens offensive line. The quartet led a unit which helped Franklin Pierce average 99.9 rushing yards per game, good for fifth in the league. The Ravens also ranked fifth in the league in sacks allowed, surrendering 18 for a loss of 147 yards on the year. Pizzarella caps his career with his second straight selection to the First Team, while Bogardus earns his first All-CSFL selection.

Becerra finished the season with 26 tackles (25 solo) out of the defensive backfield for the Ravens. Along the way, he recorded six tackles for loss, totaling 31 yards, and 3.5 sacks, totaling a loss of 24 yards.

Jean filled out his stat line across multiple columns in 2016, showcasing his versatility and earning his second career All-CSFL Honorable Mention, as he was also honored as a running back as a sophomore. He collected 33 tackles (18 solo) on the year, including 5.5 tackles for loss of 34 yards and 2.5 sacks for a loss of 19 yards. Jean defended four passes on the season, breaking up three and intercepting one, recording 20 return yards in the process. He also recovered one fumble and returned it 19 yards.

Johns finished his freshman season 17th in the CSFL with 6.0 tackles per game. In all, he collected 42 tackles (27 solo), tallying nine tackles for loss of 18 yards and two sacks for loss of five yards along the way. Johns intercepted three passes, which he returned for 59 yards, including one interception returned for a touchdown. He also recovered one fumble on the year.

Moreno finished third on the team with 34 tackles (13 solo) and earns Honorable Mention honors to go with his All-CSFL Second Team selection two years ago as a freshman. He recorded 8.5 tackles for loss of 35 yards, including two sacks for loss of 15 yards, along the way, and also recovered a pair of fumbles.

Revere was the team's leading receiver in his freshman campaign and finished ninth in the CSFL in both receiving yards (315) and receiving touchdowns (3). He had 19 catches on the season, leading to an average of 16.6 yards per reception, which ranked sixth in the league, and his longest catch of the year was 42 yards. Revere also returned 11 kickoffs for 154 yards (14.0 yards per return) and eight punts for 60 yards (7.5 yards per return).

LoPresti finished his freshman season with nine tackles (four solo), including 1.5 tackles for loss of three yards. Along the way, he broke up four passes.

Powell finished tied for second on the team with nine catches on the season. It was good for 119 yards (13.2 yards per catch) and a pair of touchdowns. Powell's longest reception of the year went for 55 yards.

The Ravens finished the 2016 campaign at 4-3. Facing a 1-2 mark after a 33-12 loss at home to Pennsylvania on Oct. 1, Franklin Pierce rallied with three wins in its final four games to finish with a winning record for the second straight year
