Softball: Ravens Sink Post University Eagles in Non-Conference Doubleheader; Secure 20th Win of the Season

RINDGE, N.H (4/16/2024) – The Ravens crossed the 20 win mark on the 2024 season Tuesday afternoon following a doubleheader sweep over the Post Univeristy Eagles. Pierce got the job done in just 5 innings in game one with an 8-0 mercy rule. Game two went the distance but the Ravens closed out their second victory of the day, 7-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• In Game 1 of the doubleheader, Franklin Pierce scored five runs in the bottom of the second. The Ravens got on the board when freshman catcher Charlit Hartenstein (Massapequa, NY) filed out to right field, scoring junior infielder Lita Vorseth (Mesa, AZ). Next, junior outfielder Bella Williams (Phoenix, AZ) had a 2 RBI double, scoring junior first baseman Anna Erikson (Temecula, CA) and sophomore outfielder Amy Jones (San Diego, CA). Then, freshman designated player Georgia Clough (Barriere, British Columbia) had a 2 RBI triple, scoring senior infielder Haley Bigwood (Athol, MA) and Williams. 

• In the bottom of the third, the Ravens added three more runs. Hartenstein filed out once again to right field, scoring senior infielder Molly Magnette (Ayer, MA) to make it 6-0. Next, senior pitcher Samantha Sylvester (Morris, CT) had an RBI double, scoring Jones to give the Ravens a 7-0 lead. Finally, Williams singled to right field for her third hit of the game, scoring Sylvester to make it 8-0. 

• The Ravens held on to pick up the game-one mercy rule win over the Eagles for their 19th win of the season. 

• In Game 2, the Ravens scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Bigwood had an RBI double, scoring Williams. Senior catcher Ashley Cangiano (North Attleboro, MA) had an RBI double, scoring Bigwood. Next, Vorseth had an RBI double, scoring Cangiano, and then freshman pitcher Raylee Gilbert (Waterville, ME) grounded out to third, and Molly Magnette scored from third base. 

• The Eagles scored a run in the top of the second. In the top of the third, senior infielder Caitlin DeAngelis homered for the third time this season to cut the Ravens lead in half. 

• Franklin Pierce put the game away when they scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore pitcher Savannah Arreguin (Pacoima, CA) scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-2 Ravens. Hartenstein filed out to center field, scoring senior catcher Jenna Murray (Wilbraham, MA) to make it 7-2 Franklin Pierce. 

• The Ravens picked up their 20th win of the season with the game-two win over Post. Franklin Pierce softball has hit the 20-win mark for the fourth year in a row. 

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS

• In Game 1 of the doubleheader, senior pitcher Sabrina Gonzalez (Chandler, AZ) picked up her tenth win of the season and pitched three scoreless innings. She gave up four hits, two walks, and struck out three batters. Gilbert closed out the game and pitched two scoreless innings. She gave up three walks and no hits. 

• Franklin Pierce outhit Post 11-4. 

• Williams went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and scored a run. Bigwood went 1 for 2 and scored a run. Vorseth went 2 for 2 and scored a run. Jones went 2 for 3 and scored two runs. 

• Game 2 was highlighted by freshman pitcher Kennedy Morris (Stafford, CT). She pitched three scoreless innings in relief and picked up her third win of the season. She gave up one hit, one walk, and struck out one batter. 

• Franklin Pierce outhit Post 9-5. Both teams had one error. 

• Williams went 2 for 3 and scored a run. Bigwood went 2 for 4 with an RBI and scored two runs. 

NEXT FOR THE RAVENS

• The Ravens hit the road to Waltham, Massachusetts, for a doubleheader as they take on Bentley University on Saturday, April 20. Game one is at noon, followed by game two at 2 p.m.
