Softball's Playoff Run Cut Short with 8-2 Loss Against Assumption in NE10 Second Round

GARDEN CITY, N.Y (5/4/23) – It was bout of déjà vu for the No. 3 seeded Franklin Pierce University softball team, who saw their postseason run once again halted by No. 6 Assumption University in the second round of the NE10 Championship Tournament, falling by a score of 8-2 at Janet L. It was the third consecutive meeting in the tournament's second round between the Ravens and Greyhounds. With the loss, Pierce drops to a 32-18 record on the season, while Assumption advances to face No. 2 Bentley in the next round with an improved to 23-17 overall record.

With one out, Assumption would take the early lead in the top of the second inning following an RBI fielder's choice from Emma Bloom which scored junior Abigail Larson from third. The score would remain the same through three scoreless innings up until the fifth, where the Assumption offense would erupt for six more runs to stretch their lead out to 7-0. Starting the scoring rally would be a deep shot over the fence in left field from Mackenzie Bruggeman, which would be promptly followed with an RBI single down the left field line by Emma Bloom, scoring her second runner of the day. Two more runs would cross home plate before the end of the inning, thanks to an RBI triple to right-center by Jordan Dwyer and another fielder's choice bunt from Lauren Geremia.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Ravens would get their first run by way of an RBI single down the third base line from senior Melissa Konopinski (Butler, N.J). Not long after, freshman Savannah Arreguin () kept the fire burning with a base hit into left field,  scoring junior baserunner Haley Bigwood (Athol, Mass.) to shave the Assumption lead down to 7-2.

In the top of the seventh, the Greyhounds padded their lead with their eighth and final run of the game on a passed ball, which allowed Abigail Larson to slide across home plate.

In an effort to keep the game alive with two outs in the bottom of the seventh,  Haley Bigwood (Athol, Mass.) would drive a double to the left-center field gap, but would advance no further as Greyhound pitcher Anna Tassone would force the Ravens into a game-ending groundout. completing the upset by a score of 8-2.

Earning the start in the circle was junior Sabrina Gonzalez (Chandler, Ariz.), who pitched through 4.1 innings with two earned runs allowed on six hits and two walks. Savannah Arreguin (Pacoima, Calif.) entered the game mid-way through to finish out the fifth inning, allowing four runs on three hits. To finish things out, Abby Poirot (Winstead, Conn.) would pitch the final two innings allowing one earned run on two hits with one strikeout.

The action may not be done just yet, as the Ravens will now await news on a possible position in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, while currently holding out as the sixth-seed in the East Region.
