WALTHAM, Mass. (April 9, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University softball team was on the road at Bentley on Saturday afternoon and suffered a pair of six-inning defeats, with the eight-run rule invoked in each half of the Northeast-10 Conference, Northeast Division doubleheader. Bentley took an 8-0 win in the first game and followed up with an 11-3 win in the second game at Bentley Field.

With the two losses, the Ravens fall to 5-16 (1-8 Northeast-10, 1-8 Northeast Division), while the Falcons advance to 10-10 (8-2 Northeast-10, 6-1 Northeast Division).

In the first game, both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the second inning, when Bentley's offense came to life. Five of the team's eight runs were scored in the second inning, after singles were hit by senior first basemen Morgan Mazone, junior third basemen Katelyn Lebreux and sophomore second basemen Catie Noons. Another run was scored for the Falcons after a wild pitch by Adee.

The next three runs for the Falcons would come in the fifth and sixth innings, after a single and groundout by senior shortstop Alex Borrelli to advance the baserunner and a groundout by sophomore right fielder Stephanie McQuaid in the sixth. The two hits for the Ravens in the game went to freshman pinch hitter Ashley Deyo (Dover, N.H.) and senior shortstop Courtney Caputo (Stony Brook, N.Y.).

Bentley pitcher Kelly Ferris (5-6) allowed only two hits for the Ravens and had four strikeouts over the course of the six innings to pick up the win.

Senior Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.) allowed nine hits and six runs over four innings while taking the loss (0-7).

In the second game of the day, the Ravens' bats came to life in the bottom of the first inning, with three singles. Freshman Madison Ryan (Dracut, Mass.) had one to lead off, followed by sophomore second baseman Samantha Bonvino (Milford, Mass.). With runners on second and third base, a sacrifice fly by sophomore centerfielder Cassidy Sorenson (Billerica, Mass.) sent one run home to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead. Moments later, a single by sophomore right fielder Jaclyn Cortese (Upton, Mass.) sent home Bonvino to make the score 2-0.

When the Falcons came up to bat, they answered those two runs with two of their own to tie the game at 2-2 with a pair of RBI singles from junior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy and Borrelli.

After the Ravens went scoreless in the top of the second, Bentley came to life once again in the bottom of the inning scoring five more runs. A double by Lebreux and a single by Noons sent in two of the five runs. Borrelli reached on a fielder's choice, which sent sophomore right fielder Jordan Ballantyne home to send in a third run. Noons scored on a wild pitch, which also advanced Borrelli to second base. The final single of the inning, by junior centerfielder Chelsea Vena, sent Borrelli home to score the fifth and final run of the frame.

In the top of the third inning, Franklin Pierce scored its final run of the game. After loading the bases, a ground out by Sorenson sent teammate Bonvino home to make the score 7-3.

Bentley proceeded to score two more runs in the bottom of the third, after a double by Borrelli made the score 9-3.

After both teams went scoreless in the forth, Bentley scored in the bottom of the fifth, as Kennedy hit a triple to left-center and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.

The game's final run was scored in the bottom of the sixth inning, on a single to left field by Noons to make it 11-3 and end the game.

Junior pitcher Michelle DeVito had one strikeout and allowed four hits and three runs over the opening three innings. Ferris (6-6) came in and struck out two over three shutout innings to pick up the win in both ends of the twinbill.

Freshman Sabrina LoMonaco (Franklin, Mass.) had three strikeouts and allowed eight hits over the first two innings while taking the loss (0-6) for the Ravens.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, April 12, when they travel to Saint Anselm for a Northeast-10 Conference, Northeast Division doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at South Athletic Fields in Manchester, N.H.
