Softball Drops DH at SNHU on Thursday

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 21,
2011) -- The Franklin Pierce University softball team was
swept in a doubleheader at Southern New Hampshire on Thursday night
in Manchester. The Ravens fell 8-0 in five innings in game one, and
then dropped a 7-1 decision in game two. The Ravens fell to 9-23
overall and 7-13 in the Northeast-10, while SNHU improved to 16-20
and 14-8 in league play.
In game two, Jessica Furtado (Taunton, Mass.)
drove in a first inning run to put the Ravens on top, 1-0, but SNHU
scored five times in the bottom half of the frame to take a 5-1
advantage. The Penmen added a pair of runs in the fifth to cap the
scoring and seal the win.
Rachel Allen (Hull, Mass.) got the start in the
pitching circle and went 4.0 innings, yielding seven runs on nine
hits with no strikeouts and two walks, while suffering the loss.
Kayla Johnson (Hudson, N.H. ) pitched two innings
of relief in the setback.
Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) had two hits in
the game to lead the Franklin Pierce offensive attack.
The Ravens were limited to one hit in game one, as senior second
baseman Emily Griffin (Leominster, Mass.) stroked
a single to lead the offense.
Melissa Vitagliano, Cristy Jenkins, Jessica Douillette and Morgan
Farmer each drove in a pair of runs in game one to lead the Penmen
to victory.
Jess Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) got the start in
the pitching circle for Franklin Pierce and suffered the loss after
going 4.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with two
strikeouts and a walk. Dolores Mattice went 5.0 innings and yielded
just the one hit to Griffin to earn the win for Southern New
Hampshire.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Friday when the Ravens play host
to New Haven in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. at FPU Softball Field in
Rindge.
