Franklin Pierce Competes at N.H. Rowing Championships

MV4 places fourth, WV4 repeat bid falls short, novice crews shine

HOOKSETT, N.H. (October 15, 2007) - The Franklin Pierce men's and women's rowing teams turned some solid results at the New Hampshire Rowing Championships on the Merrimack River this weekend.

While Franklin Pierce's women's varsity four saw its bid to repeat its gold-medal winning performance of a year ago, several over Raven crews excelled at the competitions, including gold-medal winning performances by two novice boats.

Franklin Pierce's men's varsity four narrowly missed its first medal with a fourth place finish out of 14 crews, completing the three-mile course in 16:25, just eight-seconds behind third-place University of Vermont. Massachusetts Institute of Technology took the gold medal with a blistering pace of 14:53, but second through eighth place was separated by just 40-seconds. Bowdoin Rowing Association was second with a time of 16:00.

Rowing for the Ravens were sophomore Ian Randall (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) at stroke, senior William Eroh (Meridan, Conn./Lyman Hall) in the three-seat, sophomore Isaac Breton (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) in the two-seat and freshman Kai Dadian (Saint Louis, Mo./University City) in the bow, with senior Brittany Bonesteel (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce's women's varsity four placed ninth out of 20 crews with a time of 18:02 over the three-mile course. Simmons College won a tightly-packed race with a time of 17:08, edging second-place MIT (17:09) by a second. The Ravens finished just one second behind both Brandies University (18:01) and the Bowdoin Rowing Association "C-boat." Rowing for the Ravens were senior Blair Granum (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) at stroke, junior Cassie Ela (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Regional) in the three-seat, senior Gwenn Curtis (Falls Village, Conn./Housatonic Valley) at the two-seat and senior Katherine Surgen (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) in the bow, with junior Vanessa Leon (Lenox, Mass./Lenox) as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce's women's varsity eight placed seventh out of 12 crews with a time of 16:57 over the three-mile run. MIT took the top two spots, with the A-boat turning in a time of 15:50 for first-place, while its C-boat took second with a time of 15:56. The Ravens finished just 23-seconds out of fourth place, just behind crews from Vermont (6th - 16:51) and Simmons (5th - 16:39). Rowing for Franklin Pierce were Granum at stroke, freshman Mairecait Binienda (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) in the seven-seat, Curtis at six-seat, Surgen at five-seat, sophomore Melissa Doherty (West Barnstable, Mass./Barnstable) in the four-seat, freshman Brigit Arell (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) at three-seat, sophomore Catalina Reed (Pembroke, Mass./Sacred Heart) at two-seat and Ela in the bow, with Leon as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce's men's varsity eight placed ninth with a time of 15:17. MIT captured the gold medal with a time of 13:18. Rowing for the Ravens were Randall at stroke, junior Josh Marker (Lockport, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) at seven-seat, sophomore Brett Dicrescenzo (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) at six-seat, Eroh at five-seat, sophomore Pat Brosnan (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) at four-seat, sophomore Wade Rogers (West Greenwich, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich Regional) at three-seat, Breton in the two-seat and Dadian in the bow, with Bonesteel as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce's men's novice four captured its second gold medal in as many competitions during this fall head season completing the three-miles with a time of 17:07. The Ravens finished ahead of Amherst College Rowing Association (17:17) and the University of Massachusetts Lowell (17:47). Rowing for the Ravens were sophomore Tim Cardiello (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) at stroke, sophomore Jon Gordon (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) in the three-seat, freshman Corey Pinney (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) at the two-seat and freshman Michael Parthum (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) in the bow, with freshman Julie Waxman (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) as the coxswain. Cardiello, Gordon and Pinney were all in both gold-medal winning lineups.

Franklin Pierce's women's novice four also took gold with a time of 18:44, topping the field by over a half-minute. Simmons was second in 19:14, while UMass Lowell took third in 19:34. Rowing for the Ravens were senior Allison Moore (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) at stroke, Binienda at three-seat, Arell at two-seat and Waxman in the bow, with sophomore Kristen Sheridan (Auburn, N.H./Manchester Memorial) as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce concludes its fall season on October 27 at the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia, Pa.
