School Records Tumble as Men’s Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at Mount Olive

Brogan Bonsaint and Wondu Summa

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. (March 26, 2022) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's track & field team wasted no time getting the outdoor season going on Friday and Saturday at the Trojan Challenge, hosted by Mount Olive. Sophomore Brogan Bonsaint (Somersworth, N.H.) hit the NCAA Championships qualifying standard in the javelin, with a program-record performance on Friday, while fellow sophomore Wondu Summa (Burlington, Vt.) took down the school record in the 5000 meters on Saturday.

Bonsaint heaved the javelin 59.60 meters to win the event by more than 10 meters, or over 30 feet. According to head coach Zach Emerson, Bonsaint will likely need to improve my a few meters to be a threat to qualify for the national meet at the end of the year, but hitting the standard the first time out will give him a strong base to work from. The mark is currently good for 14th in the country.

Meanwhile, it was a school-record run of 14:38 for Summa in the 5k. The Vermonter finished second in the event, trailing only Franklin Pierce alum Dage Minors (14:31), who was running unattached.

In the 1500, sophomore Ryan Outerbridge (Paget, Bermuda) came in fourth for his time of 4:07, just in front of sophomore Thomas Darrah (Thetford, Vt.) in fifth, at 4:09. Fellow sophomore Ryan Walker (Seabrook, N.H.) finished first in the 800, after crossing the line in 1:55. Outerbridge doubled up and took sixth in the 800, with a time of 2:00.41, while sophomore Evan McNeice (Wethersfield, Conn.) followed in eighth (2:00.54). Behind Summa in the 5k, graduate student Sebastien Vicary (Ulceby, United Kingdom) also competed, and took sixth for his 15:14 time.

In the 100-meter dash, first place went to sophomore Stephen Harris (Billerica, Mass.) for his 10.94-second performance. In the 400, sophomore Nathan Rinaldi (Bristol, Conn.) came in fifth for his time of 50.19 seconds.

In the shot put, sophomore Sal Lando (Sterling, Mass.) took fourth for his 14.54-meter throw. Junior Connor Everidge (Baldwinville, Mass.) was right behind him in fifth, with his 14.52-meter performance. Lando and Everidge were back-to-back in the hammer as well, as Lando took seventh (43.95m) and Everidge was eighth (43.88m). Harris was also in action in the high jump, where he got up and over 1.90 meters, to take fourth.

Franklin Pierce fielded a pair of teams in the 4x400-meter relay. The 'A' squad of Walker, Harris, Rinaldi and senior Devin Jones (Manchester, N.H.) finished second, in 3:30. The 'B' squad of Darrah, McNeice, sophomore Ntakirutimana Janvier (Burlington, Vt.) and Summa followed in third, at 3:44.

The Ravens are back in action next weekend, when select athletes will travel to Florida for the Spikes Classic at Embry-Riddle. The remainder of the squad will be headed to Southern New Hampshire, for the SNHU Spring Invitational.
