Franklin Pierce men's track & field

BOSTON (January 30, 2022) -- It was a breakout day for sophomore Stephen Harris (Billerica, Mass.) of the Franklin Pierce University men's track & field team on Sunday at Boston University. He demolished one of the program's oldest indoor records and hit the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying standard in the 200-meter dash in the process, as the multiple feet of snow outside did nothing to slow things down inside the BU Track & Tennis Center at the John Thomas Terrier Classic. The Ravens had athletes in action in multiple locations on Sunday, as the team was split between BU and the Branwen Smith-King Invitational, hosted by Tufts.

At BU, Harris stole the show in the 200-meter dash. He ran a time of 21.53 seconds to finish third, obliterating an eight-year-old school record of 22.15 in the process. The run met the NCAA provisional standard and is currently good for 16th in the country. Farther down the ledger in the event, senior Devin Jones (Manchester, N.H.) took 33rd in 22.39 seconds, and fellow senior Ethan Pezzullo (Bristol, R.I.) was 76th in 23.58 seconds.

Harris was also in action in the invite-only edition of the 60-meter dash, where he set another school record. A 7.02-second prelim time was enough to get him through to the final, where he ran seven seconds, flat, to finish seventh. Meanwhile, in the all-comers edition of the 60 meters, it was a fifth-place finish and an 11th-place finish for Jones and Pezzullo, respectively, with runs of 7.20 and 7.31 seconds.

Elsewhere in the sprints, sophomore Nathan Rinaldi (Bristol, Conn.) took 19th in the 400 meters, as he stopped the clock in 49.63 seconds.

In the middle distances, the Ravens had two entrants in the 800 meters and a quartet of runners in the mile. In the 800, it was a 40th-place finish for sophomore Ryan Walker (Seabrook, N.H.) in 1:55.29, and 81st for sophomore Ryan Outerbridge (Paget, Bermuda) in 1:59.83. In the mile, sophomore Wondu Summa (Burlington, Vt.) was 52nd (4:14.79), graduate student Sebastien Vicary (Ulceby, United Kingdom) was 82nd (4:22.13), sophomore Thomas Darrah (Thetford, Vt.) was 103rd (4:28.15), and freshman Logan Mihelich (Northwood, N.H.) was 131st (4:47.03).

As for field events, senior Armani Mette (Randolph, Mass.) finished 18th in the shot put, with a heave of 13.36 meters.

Meanwhile, at Tufts, the rest of the Ravens chalked up 33 points on the day, which was good for sixth place, in a 10-team field. On the track, Franklin Pierce got six points from senior Cody Tallent (Bellows Falls, Vt.), who finished third in the 5000 meters, with a run of 16:11.

The rest of the team's damage came in the field events. In the pole vault, sophomore Connor Nordmann (Bethel, Conn.) got up and over 4.15 meters to take fourth place. In the long jump, it was a fifth-place finish for fellow sophomore Angel Gonzalez (North Andover, Mass.), with a leap of 5.90 meters.

It was a trio of point scorers in the throwing events for the Ravens. In the shot put, senior Croix Albee (Trenton, Maine) took second and sophomore Sal Lando (Sterling, Mass.) was fifth, with throws of 14.73 and 14.19 meters, respectively. Albee doubled up and came back for the weight throw, where he finished fourth, with a throw of 13.65 meters.

The Ravens have a pair of meets on the schedule for next weekend, as well. Those who have qualified will head to Boston for the NEICAAA (New England) Championships on Feb. 4-5, while the rest of the squad will stick in the Granite State and travel to Plymouth State on Feb. 5.
